Forum Supporter
10 years of FIF
As you all have probably noticed, the forum is pretty outdated. The software is nearly 10 years old, and between the forum software, the server OS, the backend apps like php, mysql, etc. and all the version compatibilities and inter-dependencies, doing any sort of in place upgrade simply isn't worth the effort. This makes maintaining the forum in its current state less and less feasible, so we will be migrating to a new server.
The major decision we had to make was regarding the forum software itself as we've been on vbulletin 4 forever, and it's no longer supported. The logical choice would be to upgrade to vb5, but the problem is vb5 kind of sucks and doesn't have anywhere near the community support that vb4 did. After doing some research, we decided moving to the latest xenForo v2 forum software was the best path forward.
It's almost a decade newer than the software we've been using, so obviously it has its benefits. It natively supports embedding stuff like youtube videos, tweets, etc without having to write a bunch of custom code to support it. It has a built in mobile interface, so it should perform better on mobile devices without having to use tapatalk or whatever the fuck. It has features like user tagging and getting notified when you get tagged/quoted/thanked (via browser push notifications if you enable it). It's also more developer friendly, making it easier to create custom content. And most importantly, it supports the migration of existing vb forums so we won't lose any posts/threads/etc. I'll go into more detail on some of the updates and changes once we're migrated over.
This has been in the works for a while now but we wanted to wait until the season was over and then I just needed to find time to work on it. The tentative plan is to shut down the forum in a little less than 2 weeks so that I can begin the process. I'll provide a more specific date as it gets closer. Then I'll proceed with the export, import, installation, migration and customization on the new host. After some testing, I'll get the current IP migrated over to the new host. Assuming I don't run into issues, it should be a day or 2 of downtime. The domain will remain the same, and you'll be able to login with your existing username/password. The main difference is the new site will be https and the main page will be index.php instead of forum.php. There should be redirects in place but to be safe you can save off the below link.
