Someone asked the question in a match thread during the USA/Colombia game about whether - from a fan's POV - would they prefer the USA remain in CONCACAF where they are currently the best team in the federation, or would they prefer to have a merger (of sorts) with CONMEBOL, where they unquestionably would move several spots down the ladder but at least would be in competitions that would challenge them, and not just challenge them in the Copa América itself but even for qualifying for competitions to begin with (World Cup qualifying would absolutely not be guaranteed for example).
If I was a USA supporter, the answer for me would be obvious. Winning the Gold Cup or whatever other tinpot CONCACAF competitions there are right now where the only real competition is a corrupt and decrepit Mexican team is a waste of everybody's time. You aren't getting any better this way because you're not being challenged at all. It's like literally everything in life, you get better when you're actually challenged into positions that force you to be better. (Either that or you get left behind for being inadequate; either/or.) The USA would get throttled playing Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia (have to include them after this past Saturday), and quite likely even nations like Chile and Perú. Good. Smack some common sense into the federation and Americans in general so that we stop hearing about how "this time it's different, we've got actual European league players in our team" or whatever bullshit USA supporters are spoonfed. Three of the USA starters this weekend - Balogun, Cardozo, Dest - play for the United States because - as alluded to above - they aren't good enough to play for the national teams of the countries they actually grew up in (UK, Brazil, Netherlands). They build a lot of their squad on scraps and then get told how great they are because of...Christian Pulisic? Give me a fucking break.
