Hingis set to return to tennis in Australian tournament

Five-time Grand Slam singles champion Martina Hingis will return to professional tennis in an Australian hardcourt tournament in early January, opening the way for a place in the Australian Open.

The Swiss former No. 1 will compete in the Mondial Australian Women's Hardcourts on the Gold Coast, where she will be up against Maria Sharapova, from January 1 to 7.

"I'm very excited to be making my return to competitive tennis in Australia, I have always felt at home on the Australian courts," Hingis said in a statement.

"I'm really looking forward to competing again and making my first trip to the Gold Coast.

"I know I'll get some tough matches and it will allow me to get used to the Australian summer coming from the European winter, both of which will be helpful with my preparation for the Australian Open," she added.

Hingis achieved world No. 1 status in March 1997, aged 16, and held the title for 209 non-consecutive weeks until 2001.

She has won the Australian Open three times -- in 1997, 1998 and 1999 -- and reached the final on three other occasions before retiring due to recurring injuries in 2002.

Director of the Gold Coast tournament Liz Smylie said she was thrilled Hingis would be playing in the event.

"Martina is a legend of women's tennis and an unbelievable performer in Australia," Smylie said.

Hingis, 25, announced last month that she would return to game and is expected to play the Medibank International in Sydney before heading to Melbourne for the Australian Open later in January.

Her last professional match was at the Thailand Open in February, where she lost in three sets in the opening round to German Marlene Weingartner.

Chief executive officer of the Australian Open Paul McNamee said the announcement meant Hingis' presence at the Grand Slam tournament was "a fait accompli."

"Her management knew that she had only to commit to coming to Australia and an Australian Open wildcard would be a formality," he told Australian Associated Press. "She's all set for the Open which is great news."

McNamee said Hingis was popular in Australia and while he did not expect her to win, she would add intrigue to the tournament.

"It's one of those great moments in sport 'Will the former champion be able to come back and at what level?'" he said.

"No one will be expecting her to win the tournament but the question is whether she will be able to beat some seeds and make a run through to the second week.

"I certainly believe she still has the capability of being there in the second week."

I allways liked hingis so I am glad about that

She doesn't need to be the best, but nice to see her again

by the way: I hate sharapova, I can't even watch at her!

Oh but she's good looking..Anyway Hingis is only 25 so she could make it to top 10 if her ankles are fine..

may be improbable ... but not impossible

All I can say about tennis is, just give all trophies, barring the French Open, to Roger Federer already. This guy is so smooth and the closest thing to being perfect. Hopefully, he'll win that elusive French Open soon. Hopefully part II, he'll win all 4 major Opens in a year. :shades:

I say that for every tournament, just give federer a trophy and let's go home
and he is only 22 (one more, one less I don't know)

Wow... Hingis has just reached the semifinale in Gold Coast. She lost only one set in 3 matches. She now plays Flavia Penetta of Italy, the fourth seed.
Looks like to me that we're gonna get the old Martina back!:boogy:

And btw... Roger is 24.;)

Yeah the tournament is not that hard, but still she haven't played for almost 3 years and she's beating girls from top 50. That must mean something!

I can't wait to see her at Melbourne, I have a feeling it will be a big comeback. Well she won't win it, but a QF or something like that would be outstanding!

:D Mens tennis is so boring *my opinion* , I find it hard to sit through a full game, I just check on the end result and thats it. And those of you who think that all the trophies should be given to Federer are wrong, some times there are players who look unconquerable, but there comes a time when he has to fall from his grace. Remeber Williams sisters of 2000-2001, they looked like they could hardly lose a game in tennis, but then in 2003 both of them, started playing shit. Nadal is a big threat to Federer. I think most of the battle this year for major trophies are gonna be Nadal vs Federer.

Female tennis is GREAT :star: , but then again its not the tennis that intrests me the most :horny: :D . Sharapova is great, but I think just a wee bit to tall. My favourite player right now is Elena Dimentiavo (spelling), she has such a nice, slim figure :drunk1: , I hope she starts dressing like Serena :D  .

I remember a nice australian girl, I think she represented Australia in Sydney 2000. Jalena Dokick, or something like that. She got her name by defeating Venus at one of the Grand salams. I used to have a huge crush on her :shades: . She had the legs of a greek goddess. :D . But then I heared she had a fight with her father or something, gave up her Australian nationality, went to some other country, and I have never heared about her again. Do you guys from downunder know her?? And a pic would be appreciated

Martina Hingis won another one, she is really making a great come back, I hope it she doesn't get injured again.
In my opinion she was one of the best when she left, it is always good to see the great players come back.
