haven't we been saying he was crap for like 5 years and wanting to get rid of him forever. How can people seriously consider him LGI?

De Vrij was a pretty big signing at the time and another step in our path back towards legitimacy. He's a 2x Scudetto winner and he was a starter for the entire season for one of those. Not LGI material but put some respect on his name.

- Before signing for Inter, De Vrij was a top Serie A cb. He was linked with many top clubs and the only reason he had stayed at Lazio was because Lotito was asking for crazy money. When Inter signed him on a free it was considered a coup.

- In his first season at Inter he struggled a bit. Back 4 didn't suit him and his partnership with Skriniar wasn't ideal. Still he was a reliable cb who performed at a good, but not exceptional, level.

- In his two seasons under Conte he was an absolute top player. Inter's best cb and one of the best cbs in the league. Especially in the season we won Scudetto he was outstanding.

- In Inzaghi years he has regressed and hasn't reached the high levels of his Conte years. He has also made some costly mistakes at times. But he is still at a respectable level and a decent option.

The problem with De Vrij in recent years is he's earning the salary of a top player but he doesn't perform at a top level. And that's why many of us wanted him out. He was never crap.

He might be a shout for LGI, two Scudetti, 5-6 cups/supercups, CL final. 7 seasons in the club already. Skriniar was sucked off for less (because he said some cool words) until he went to PSG.

My only grievance is that he made many mistakes in 2021/2022, but that's also on Inzaghi's non-existent defensive organization back then.

Good summary! He's had a respectable career at Inter, which is shadowed in Internet fandom by few individual errors which are have been blown out of proportions.

De Vrij's salary btw is 3.8M net, and has been for his whole Inter career. I wouldn't call that top player salary, even if that is a real money. But specially at current Inter, that 's like top9 salary.

Midfielders and forwards will always earn more than defenders. You need to compare his salary with those of the other cbs. Till 2023 summer when Bastoni signed an extension and Inter signed Pavard, De Vrij had the highest salary among cbs at the club (second highest only when Godin was around). Even now he has the third highest net salary (his gross salary is even higher than Pavard), behind Bastoni and Pavard.

Thats prob because he came on late in games or played against crap teams. Acerbi is much better but yeh i like De Vrij and he's been good for us. 'Spesh on a free.

I made a post in the summer where it showed De Vrij played almost as much minutes as Acerbi that season and proved himself to be better in big games.

I just have to keep reiterating that last season he proved he still got it.

Except the Rube game which our whole defense system collapsed, he's really good this season. If we can't guarantee a good replacement next season, I think we should extend his contract. He's not that old.
