Inter’s contract extension talks with defender Stefan de Vrij have hit a stumbling block in the form of a disagreement about the duration of a new deal for the player

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who report that the former Lazio and Feyenoord defender is seeking a new two-year contract, whilst the Nerazzurri prefer to offer just an additional season.

This comes amid the context of the Nerazzurri’s qualification for next season’s Champions League being highly uncertain, with the revenues potentially missed out on playing a big role in all of their currently ongoing contract negotiations.

Accordingly, at the moment Inter’s preference looks to be for de Vrij to sign a new deal until the end of June 2024 whilst the 31-year-old still wants to sign until the end of June 2025.

Good-guy Inter: club made him an offer, it will be him to decide to leave if he`s not happy with the duration.

I think this is more than fair: he has one last chance to get his shit together and demonstrate that he can still perform at these levels. Or he can just call it a day and leave.

WIN/WIN situation for the club, as there are plenty of good defenders available on a free.

Did okay again against Sassuolo. I was scared playing him against them, but apart from the few Sassuolo attacks at the start he was good enough to stop them from having more chances.

Sassuolo is so good against us, so I'm glad he did good this time.

Maybe if Inzaghi will revert to a lower block as Lukaku said yesterday in that interview with Henry, the club thinks there's still a place for this guy. The reported wages by the media are still a bit high imo.

He's actually been good this season in his role as a backup. Started the season off badly with bad performances in the first Milan derby and Udinese, but since Acerbi took over as a starter, De Vrij has actually been very good in matches he's played, as a starter and coming off the bench.

The problem is his wage does not align with his role. If he had a smaller salary, he'd be good in this type of role.

Unfortunately, Inter let Pirola go and the buy back is prohibitively expensive. Resigning De Vrij maybe not the best choice but mgmt thinks it's doable given the financial situation with other needs to fill. Probably two forwards, a couple of " wingers" ( figuring Gosens & Dumfries are gone), a least one midfielder (Sensi is back) and another defenseman, along with perhaps a new goalkeeper. Intersting times. Much of this can be alleviated if Inter go the youth route (Mulattieri, Carbon etc.) and probably settle for a Europa league spot unless they catch lightning in a bottle.
