This is simple hilarious. Players and team official celebrate as if they have gone through, not knowing rules says it goes to head to head when you are level and they are out.

They are appealing to CAF saying the rule is unfair...:palm:

Read about this. Is it in South Africans blood (No racist)to fuck up by miscalculating? Remember 2003 Cricket WC when Boucher just defended last ball before rain stopped the game thinking they will go through by DL method but they needed one more run to qualify.

Pollock and co you can at least blame on a reading issue. They didn't read the collum headline which said score to tie and presumed it was the score to win. Here they just didn't bother to ever check the rules.

Had to :troll: it. I've typed and said the wrong things in frustration, so I know the feeling.

I will say, watching them "celebrate" is hilarious. Why did they think they had the tiebreaker in qualifying?

@Coasterfreek: They didn't read the rules and presumed it was on goal differences not head to head. They have actually launched an official complaint to CAF claiming the rule is unfair...:palm:

[h=1]South African FA lodges appeal with Caf over African Cup of Nations qualifying[/h] [h=2]Niger qualified for next year's African Cup of Nations tournament ahead of South Africa despite being inferior in terms of goal difference[/h]

The South African Football Association (Safa) has lodged an appeal with the Confederation of African Football (Caf) regarding the outcome of qualification for the 2012 African Cup of Nations tournament to be held in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.

South Africa finished top of Group G on goal difference, followed by Sierra Leone and Niger – all tied on nine points, with Egypt in fourth place four points adrift. But according to CAF rules, Bafana Bafana misses out while Niger proceeds to the finals next year.
Don't Miss

South Africa played to a goalless draw against Sierra Leone at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, while Egypt defeated Niger 3-0.

In a letter addressed to Caf, Safa stated: “We have noted that Caf has announced that Niger has qualified in our group, despite South Africa finishing on top of the group in terms of goal difference, which is the universally recognised means of separating teams who are equal on points.

“We understand that you are using rule 14.1 to make your determination. However, we believe that the team finishing top of the log at the end of the competition is automatically determined at the end of 90 minutes play, and that the second place is determined by the other rules. We will lay out our objection more fully shortly, but in the meantime wish to signal that we intend to challenge this interpretation and application of the rules.”

Safa has taken legal opinion on the matter, and has found precedent where competition rules that are patently unfair have been overturned on appeal.

According to Kickoff.com, addressing the team after the match, Safa President Kirsten Nematandani said, “Do not despair, all is not lost. We believe we have a case and we will carry this fight all the way. If Caf’s rules are ambiguous then we need to challenge that and we are well within our rights to do so. In the meantime be positive, and leave everything in our hands.”

[h=1]Safa on 'wild goose chase'[/h]
10 October 2011, 18:12

Safa is on a wild goose chase in protesting against the elimination of Bafana Bafana from next year's African Cup of Nations tournament, Kaizer Chiefs supremo Kaizer Motaung said on Monday.
Former Bafana Bafana coach Clive Barker also criticised the SA Football Association (Safa) over the team's elimination, after a goalless qualifying round draw against Sierra Leone in Nelspruit on Saturday.
Motaung said: "I'm afraid Safa are way off the mark in stating that the deciding factor in such cases must be goal difference.
"Safa are entitled to make their own rules for their own events and those presently tabulated have been in force for a number of years. Safa should have been aware of this."
Safa should face the facts of its own bungling, Motaung said.
Barker was even more scathing in his comments.
"The rules employed for the African Nations Cup are entrenched and Safa and the Bafana technical staff should have been aware of them before the deciding game against Sierra Leone," he said.
"It is mind-boggling that no one at Safa or in the Bafana set-up was familiar with the facts."
After an initial celebration on Saturday, the Bafana players and the crowd at the Mbombela Stadium heard from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) that it was Niger which had qualified from the group.
Locals believed South Africa had qualified for next year's Afcon event on goal difference.
The rules of the competition stipulate that if teams finish level on points – Niger, South Africa and Sierra Leone all finished with nine points – the nett results of games involving the sides would be the deciding factor.
This gave Niger six points and South Africa and Sierra Leone five each.
Motaung said several competitions under the control of the Union of European Football Associations (Uefa) followed a similar procedure to Caf.
The Spanish League championship, for example, also placed head-to-head results ahead of goal difference in settling issues.
Barker said that adding to the embarrassment was the fact that a Safa technical team including president Kirsten Nematandani and vice-president Danny Jordaan had been at Caf's meeting in Cairo two weeks ago.
This had been an ideal occasion to familiarise themselves with the Nation Cup rules, and where Bafana stood before the fateful Sierra Leone clash.
"The reality," said Barker, "was that Bafana had to win that final game to qualify, even if Niger were beaten by Egypt – which, in fact, was what happened – yet every last man at Safa and in the Bafana camp believed a draw could be good enough."
Barker was also critical of the ham-acting of Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, who appeared to feign injury in order to misguidedly waste time towards the end of the game against Sierra Leone.
"A delighted Khune then went on to wave to the crowd for an exhibition that could have put him in line for a Hollywood Oscar, but which, fate would have it, cost Bafana valuable time during which they could have pursued scoring the all-important winning goal," said Barker.
He did not blame Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane for the debacle.
"It was the responsibility of Safa officials and the Bafana technical staff and assistants to inform the coach of the rules," he said.

[h=1]Safa officially files protest[/h]
10 October 2011, 22:21

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has officially filed a protest letter to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Monday following the controversial 2012 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying ruling that eliminated Bafana Bafana, despite them finishing on top of Group G on goal difference based on article 37.5 interpretation of the regulations.
CAF invoked rule 14.1, which states that in case of equality of points between two or more teams, after all the group matches, a greater number of points obtained in the matches between the concerned teams will determine the group winner.
"We hereby declare a dispute with CAF, in terms of article 14.7 of CAF statues, regarding the provisions of the regulations due to their inconsistency with the Regulations of Fifa Competitions and their effect of promoting unfair competition, amongst other things.
"We are of the opinion that this particular rule should be thrown out because it defeats the traditional way of determining a log standing," said SAFA CEO, Robin Petersen.
There is a legal precedent in South Africa were an appeal body rescinded unfair competition rules after the fact.
SAFA admitted to knowing that they were well aware of rule 14.1 ahead of Saturday's clash with Sierra Leone, but their interpretation of the rule differed from that of CAF. They interpreted "between" to mean between South Africa and each of the teams tied on points with them.
Based on that, it was the technical team's thinking that Bafana Bafana only needed a draw to qualify; so they played for a draw in the closing stages of the match.
On a previous occasion when three teams were left on equal number of points, both interpretation yielded the same outcome and therefore there was no complaints.
This is the first time that three teams ended up with the same number of points and the two interpretations lead to a different ranking and it is the first time the rule is identified as unfair because in this instance, the team that performed the best got eliminated.
