There are 2 ways to look at Inzaghi's set-up:

Positive

We have a similar game plan as our last match. Against Roma we pivoted our attack to the left, to the extent that even Brozovic was pinned to the left. That resulted in endless diagonal pass from Bastoni and even Dumfries ended up scoring. Against Real, we centralised our attack from the right. This is also a smart tactic to neutralise Vincius's threat. For this reason, Perisic had plenty of space to run. On this basis, Inzaghi executed our first half masterfully.

Negative

Subbing Vecino and Gagliardini in at the 60 minute showed we have no intention to win or even draw this game. If that's what we aim for, then why not just rotate most of the players? See I'd have no issue if we lose this match with Radu, Vidal, Sanchez and Vecino all starting. But now we end up exhausting our starters AND losing Barella AND demoralising ourselves. Honestly we rarely have the luxury to not having to play to win. We wasted a perfectly good chance and ended up shooting ourselves on the toe.

Sir, please share 5% of your salary for me. You set up the starting XI and I handle the subs. It will be much better I promise.

Jokes aside, we are unbeatable if he simply let Farris (or whoever his assistant is) control the 2nd half.

Had the midfield subs occurred after Barella's red, it wouldn't have made a big deal, but Inzaghi thought he was being proactive by playing Vidal and Vecino with Barella as regista. The dumfries sub made little sense to me as well. Cafe is right, we didn't get to see how it worked because we went to 10 men, but when has any combination of Vecino, Vidal and gagliardini worked?

Heck, his subs were a long term strategy in IMHO. No way he could predicted Barella melt down.

I can't fault Inzaghi for the subs because we didn't see the effect of them. They were on the pitch for 4 mins before Barella red.
Out of all the games he decided to sub off Brozovic right when he needed him the most. And VERY early.

Meanwhile he played 90 mins in games we were winning comfortably in the league.

He should have taken Barella out due to poor performance. Not Brozovic.
Brozovic is also human, he gets tired as well. For me, Inzaghi has realized that we didn't have chance to win, that's why he made those substitutes. Barella played 60 min last game, and rested the game before. That's the reason he stayed despite being a shit.

Word. Stronger teams than us can't oveturn a 1-0 defeat with 1 man down against this Madrid. The match was practically over when Barella got himself sent off. Before that it was an even match.

Real took a better advantage of their opportunies thx to their experience and quality players and yet they needed two well taken long range shots to score against us.

Whoever we meet next I expect a good fight from this Inter. Hopefully with some new additions in January we can add more quality and options to this team so the gap between our starters and the bench won't be this massive anymore.

Probably never but Gagliardini was brought in only after Barella was already sent off so those guys weren't there together in 11v11. We dominated them in the first half with the possession but couldn't score. With 10 men, it's impossible to dominate with possession as Real has such a good ball playing players, specially in the midfield.

Like we talked in the Whatsapp group, my guess is Inzaghi wanted straightforwardness with Vecino and Vidal. Taking Brozovic out was mysterious but not a dealbreaker since Barella could do the same thing as regista as Brozovic when there's no pressing from the opponent and Ancelotti decided to do no pressing at all. Inzaghi probably wanted more aerial pressure to their box as he took Dzeko out who was really off in this match (maybe tired). Unfortunately we didn't get to see Lautaro-Sanchez duo at all.

Inzaghi keeps trying weird shit. Dumfries playing as striker, Brozovic as defender, Bastoni as winger, Perisic filling in everywhere.. I'm not complaining, since we were doing quite well in terms of game play.

There are 2 key aspects that I have been noticing in all our games now.
- We play well, there is great movement on and off the ball, and good interlinking. And while we create a lot of chances, there are very few clear cut chances. We have to do better in the final third. Part of this is on the individuals.
- We lack that individual quality. Both goals we conceded against Madrid were pieces of individual brilliance. No one in Inter can conjure that up. Hakan may have the odd good shot, but the rest are not good at shooting at all. And Correa is the only one who can take on defenders, but again not world class at it.

That lack of individual quality doesn't hurt us much against the average sides. We have enough talent, and are tactically well drilled enough, to overcome them by sheer dominance and chances created. But you need some brilliance to open up top sides. And we have seen that twice against Madrid now, and also the top 6 in Serie A.

Inzaghi is doing well enough. The first challenge that we have to see him overcome is a drop in form at some point, if it happens, or if some results don't go our way. The other is where we need help from Marotta and the owners to bring in some good players that can address the above issues.

Sanchez, Vecino, Gagliardini are all done. We need another dynamic midfielder, and one who has some goals in him. And we need a good forward. Scamacca and Raspadori are not there to raise our level yet.

until this coach gets the proper players on bench
we can hardly blame him!, gag and vec and vidal
are rarely useful for the team, the first 2 just keep running like clowns
and i dont think they have the capacity to improve or adapt at this age.

inzaghi deserves reinforcement in the middle and the attack

Simone Inzaghi said Inter were made to regret failing to capitalise on a positive first-half display in their Champions League defeat against Real Madrid.

"Clearly, we wanted to get a different result, but it will be very useful for our future,"

"There are a lot of regrets with the first half because, in my opinion, we played very well and with personality.

"Unfortunately, we created a lot of situations where the numbers were in our favour, but we went into the interval a goal down.

"It was an open match; we were close to scoring the equaliser after the break. When it became 10 against 11, it was more difficult.

"We are growing; I can say very little to my players in terms of performance.

"We played well in both games against Real Madrid, but lost them both. Obviously, we have to do something more."

Inzaghi is doing what Inzaghi does and what he can with this roster. Just getting out of the group and having a chance to fight for first place was a breath of fresh air.

I'll gladly take it for now, but he needs to get a better bench (and a huge improvement in the striker department) for us to do proper damage in these kind of games.

When we beat Bayern in spring 2011, we had Pandev and Eto'o, we don't have that kind of talent right now, Džeko is amazing, but he is old, Lautaro gets outsmarted by defenders, Correa and Sanchez can't get enough playing time because of injuries. Also Sanchez became the annoying Sanchez again, shooting when should be passing, always dribbling for too long and just not having good link up play, but okay, I won't fault him for this game. We are paying him too much though

Recency bias I'm sure, but the way we've been playing lately is better than we ever did under conte IMO and I don't mean one game, I mean run of games

Under Conte most games were very frustrating. We had good spells of dominance but it was the same rigid flow all the time.

We're far more unpredictable now yet we still have glaring issues. Mostly personnel related.
