Inter President Steven Zhang was ready to give his approval to sign Paulo Dybala on a free transfer in the summer, but coach Simone Inzaghi did not want to give up on Joaquin Correa.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who report that the President’s green light to sign the Argentine was contingent on a forward already in the league leaving, and Inzaghi made clear that he wanted to keep Correa.
Inter prioritized signing Romelu Lukaku above all other moves once it became clear that the Belgian would be an attainable goal.
In this respect, all of Zhang, Inzaghi, and the club directors were of one mind that bringing back the 29-year-old would be prioritized over all other moves, including Dybala.
However, Dybala remained very much within the Nerazzurri’s grasp until at least into early July, and Zhang was keen to get a deal done for the Argentine.
The issue was always making space in the squad for the former Juventus forward, with Correa the likeliest player to be sold to make way.
However, Inzaghi still trusts that the 28-year-old can come good following his move from Lazio last summer.
Accordingly, the coach strongly backed keeping Correa, even if it meant that the Nerazzurri were unable to sign Dybala.

If you were to tell me losing to Sassuolo gets him fired sign me up. The issue is I don’t think it will. He is safe til at least the World Cup break. I hope by then he’s at least able to get us back to looking like a top four side. If he is able to do that then I’m fine keeping him til seasons end.

With that being said I think he’s losing the players. The amount of times we have been beaten because we concede two goals every three shots on target is nauseating. A part of that is Handanovic being a bad GK(That’s what he is, there’s no other way around it) but a lot of it is a poorly structured defense allowing players into dangerous positions. Inzaghi teams have always been poor defensively.

For him to say in his press conference that we played how he wants he wasn’t lying. We created a boatload of chances, scored one, and broke down badly defensively two times, both resulting in goals. My dream is new ownership will get a Pochettino or something if the sort but reality is Inzaghi is the best we’re getting unless ownership changes are made.

As much as it makes sense for Inzaghi to want Correa over Dybala, it's not possible to be real.

We said to Conte (a coach who won the scudetto, 1 month before) say bye bye to Hakimi and Lukaku without blinking an eye, and he had zero power to do something about it... We can literally pay someone to fuck Inzaghis wife, and him and his stupid hair wont do shit about it.

I've been trying to think through why this team is so poor defensively. These are my working theories.

1. Dimarco is a regular starter. This guy is an outright terrible defender, regardless of whether he's playing CB or LWB. At LWB he doesn't have the speed, stamina, or defensive ability to mark his man and he routinely gets beaten 1 v 1. As a LCB he gets outmuscled by stronger players (all players) and is often caught out of position. However, we've been forced to play Dimarco because he's one of the few players offering anything in attack. This puts a greater burden on both Bastoni and de Vrij, and neither of them have been able to cope with it. It's a lot easier to hide poor individual defenders in the midfield (Calhanoglu) than it is on the wings.
2. The loss of Perisic. Perisic was an elite defensive wingback. He made multiple goal line clearances, could put strong wingers in his pocket, and could run relentlessly for 90 minutes. We've lost him, which might be the best explanation for why Bastoni can't seem to do anything right.
3. The high line. Our team is slow, and quite poor at controlling the ball. We haven't executed a successful counterattacking goal in what feels like six months. So unlike under Conte, we don't have the ability to sit back and quickly catch teams out using Hakimi, Lukaku, and Barella. We are pushing further up the pitch and routinely getting burned by teams beating our slow back line. The Udinese game is the obvious example of this, but Lazio and Lecce also created several opportunities this way.
4. Morale? We tried our best to force both Bastoni and Skriniar out the door this summer. Skriniar and de Vrij are both playing on expiring contracts. I can't explain the multiple concentration lapses this team has had on set pieces, which makes me think maybe they're just checked out after a brutal summer.

I'm open to any other theories.

Just to add on point number 2, Perisic would try to beat his man, we don't have any of that here.

Three points vs a team he should be beating is such a dumb decisive game to decide a coach being let go or not. Roma was the game to decide that and he failed spectacularly again. Problem is that our attack also suck cause we miss midfielders or SS who can provide assists for our strikers. Our midfielders are so sluggish in decision making that every solid defence can stop our attack with ease. That problem would be solved if we still have fast flanks who know to assist and score. We had that last season in Perisic. Bottom line if we solve defence problem we'll still have problems upfront. We miss Eriksen and Dybala for that matter. This team is just not good enough for big things. And for that you need either great scouts that can find you Kvaradona like Napoli did for cheap, or rich owner that will spend on top players. Suning and Marotta did good job till fucking covid came in..We had money and we could bring good to great players like Hakimi, Eriksen, Lukaku, Barella.. Now we are poor, our scouts are nonexistential,head coach is mediocre and this is the result you get.

Spot on with everything, although I would just add for the fourth one, and I mentioned this before, there shouldn't be any excuses for bastoni and skriniar being this bad. If they are truly interistas like everyone think they are, those so-called obstacles should have been forgotten as soon as season started. That's just mine opinion, maybe it's too pragmatical, but if you really love the club then you should be able to differentiate club management wanting to sell because we are in debt and actually respecting the fans and giving your best for inter shirt when you actually end up staying. Having said all of this, I highly doubt that's the reason they play bad, the whole team for some reason regressed, and those two just followed imo.

Also, I would add a fifth reason why we are poor defensively, and it's really simple, complete lack of defensive organization and defensive tactics from inzaghi. You can play a high line, play on counterattacks etc... but you have to have some sort of organization back there, where you can see defensive players are looking where they are, where their defensive teammates are, hand gesturing to hold the line and gesturing this player is mine etc.. all those small things we saw with conte. I didn't see any of those things with inzaghi not only this year but even last year.

Our defensive stability last year if you could call it that, cos we had big problems even back then, was solely a product imo of high morale of players after winning a title and wanting to prove they can win it without conte, perisic contribution and inzaghi tactics being somewhat new and not read like a bad book like this year. Now that most of that is gone, and we actually have to rely on a real defensive system and tactics, we are in deep shit, cos there is nothing even remotely close to a defensive setup and system with inzaghi, at least not on any kind of serious level.

Someone has to explain why Inzaghi is at fault for the following:

- versus Udinese, Skriniar’s own goal and De Vrij conceding an unnecessary corner, which directly lead to Udinese´s winner:

- misplaced passes in midfield, which lead to team conceding equalizers against Roma and Ac Milan;

- Handanovic’s howler v Roma and not coming out of his line for Anderson’s goal in Lazio’s game. Also need to blame Bastoni and Dimarco for that one.

If you take away these individual errors, where would the team be in the table?

Inzaghi is at fault for his selection absolutely (waiting till Roma to start Asllani, overplaying Dzeko) and for not sticking with Onana as a starter but the players are making amateur mistakes.
