Handa is currently sat on a save percentage of 57.9% this season.

He’s let in 8/19 shots on target, or 42.1% of all shots on target.
This is the problem in football discussions. We take a stat which pains bad picture over one player and suggest he's been terrible. Why the stats are what they are is a lot more complex issue than our goalkeeper's performances.

Agree that Handa has been average for the recent seasons, disagree with the statistics as the justification. So far the goal he has conceded are mostly not his fault. The problem is he doesn't produce miraculous saves anymore which is not something we expect from top goalkeeper.

We did fail to beat Lazio in the Cup.

The thriller in which we beat Lazio was the last game of the season that qualified us for the CL - it was not a Cup game.

Ah yes, forgot that we lost in the PK shit. But I referring to that cup game, not the previous season's final game.

It's becoming increasingly obvious that this season will be, to use a generous adjective, a transformative one. At the end of which we will again have to sell whoever happens to be the easiest player to pawn off.
Once you start seeing things that way, there are no benefits to keeping Handanovic as a starter. This has nothing to do with his mistakes, keeping him as #1 at this point is merely indulging him as a thank-you to his years of service and/or captaincy. I also disagree that people have negative feelings towards Handanovic solely because he is some kind of remnant of the banter era.

I would let Onana play from now onward. Either he proves to be a good match and becomes our GK for the next couple of years (best case scenario), or he has a just good enough performance that he boosts his price and we sell him next year and get another GK (if we have to sell someone, this is also a very acceptable outcome). Worst case, he doesn't gel and is a poor match. Well, we still have Handanovic who can ride out the end of the season and get the farewell he and some others here want.

We should be more pragmatic honestly. Toldo and Cesar had enough grace to step down when the decline was clear.

January 2019, Coppa game.

It feels like you're not reading anything I said here because I was explicit about that being a couple of weeks before the captaincy thing and Perisic didn't want to play because he wanted to move to Arsenal the next day.

Manchester United stuff is not relevant here. De Gea goes to Spain like twice a week, they know he's not really serious about being at Manchester and that he's just a useful mercenary for them.

Our players actually live in Milano and generally within the region of our facilities.
Manchester United players take off to London or other places in Europe very frequently despite having to be at Manchester for training every day. At least they should.
Sorry, I was watching Udinese - Roma in parallel and it was already 2am in here. Must have misread.

- “Andre Onana is in the top five best goalkeepers in the world” - Oliver Kahn.

- "Handanovic is in the top 15" - brehme1989

Let's assume brehme meant Handanovic is ranked 4th in the top 15 ;)

I’m all for giving Onana a path into the starting XI but let’s not pretend it would make much of difference until the defense/ tactics are fixed— we’re simply getting carved open, even Onana on PCP couldn’t stop us from conceding.

If we’re lacking cohesion at the back now, it will only be worse if we just throw Onana in there without changing anything else.

This is the best take in this thread for some time. GK doesn't and shouldn't be the difference maker when there are other problems. Yes, Maignan is such for Milan but we don't have Maignan. Onana is not Maignan. We should fix our real problems which is the balance in how we play. Defence too vulnerable (and thus goalie too) then because of that.

Why is not Onana Maignan? Onana was few years ago top 5 in the world according to Olivier Kahn. Didnt know Maignan is that good.

Why is Oliver Kahn's opinion from few years ago some relevant thing?

If we asked Kahn now, would he say that still?

Kahn said that when Ajax made it to the semifinals of CL (If I remember correctly)

Even if Onana was really that good back then, he barely played in the last how many months? Now he has a new team that is clearly suffering in defence and I don't see how Onana playing would change our defence, might make it even more confusing? Does he already speak Italian?
First Inzaghi needs to fix the defence. If after that Handa still barely saves anything, give Onana a chance. But until then, Handa himself is not the main problem.

And yes, Maignan is really really good.

the Kahn quote is actually from this year. The problem is that Onana hasn't been good since that Ajax champions league season, which was 3.5 years ago. Also, Onana was making lots of mistakes in that Ajax run... I really think people just watched his youtube clips and decided that he's great, at least based on twitter.

Guys like Kahn when asked put 30 people in their top 5. It's not like they sit and think about everyone else, they're just asked about a player and give a PR appropriate response.

If the question was "tell me the best 5 GKs now", Onana's name wouldn't have crossed most people's minds.

How the fuck we missed this Maignan dude, we were always good on finding quality keepers.
