He isn't that bad physically though. He tends to hold the ball pretty well and also does wins physical challenges here and there, something that Barella lacks for example, and yet he's a midfielder. I think he is okay physically even though there is always room for improvement. I'm not gonna say that he is too good or doesn't need to improve on anything because that would be plain bullshit but the guy is doing more than okay in offensive department.

We are not playing a game where it requires dribbling or getting to past your opponent, I mean we have even strikers whom aren't capable of this. Don't we have the lowest percentage of dribbling?

Then again, if he was great defensively, great offensively, was also physically very strong and had extraordinary creativity, don't you think he would have been playing elsewhere than Inter? He may not be our ideal wingback, but as things stand, he is more than good enough for this Inter. Besides of being important for this team, I still think he's the best left wingback in Serie A and among the best of Europe.

Even these high-profile wingbacks have their flaws, be it defensively or offensively. Dunno, he is crucial for our team, and everything goes through him. I think he should have had even more goals/assists because he was so unlucky in many occasions. His attempts were pretty close and is a constant threat to opponents. I really can't complain over him.

Gosens can’t make up for this and therefore Dimarco probably will remain the better player.

Also, my only issue with the Purchase of Gosens was why didn’t Inzaghi or the rest of the wise asses at the club not see Dimarco’s potential before prioritizing a LWB. I get that Gosens was purchased to counter Perisic’s departure but it’s not like Gosens was a Perisic type player that could take on his marker. So they always were purchasing a different type of player to fill a hole left by a player they didn’t mind letting go.

Sorry but Dimarco is not better player than Gosens. Gosens is a player I can see playing for top side in EPL while Dimarco is not that good. Gosens just doesnt fit in our style and is terrible underutilized. Dimarco is much better fit for our team but he is slightly above average at his best.

I thought almost the same.
This guy was 2 years ago the best LB/LWB in Serie A. I remembered him very well from his Atalanta days and I can put my hand in fire that DiMarco won`t ever be prime Gosens value wise.
The problem is Gosens didn`t play regularly for nearly 2 years. You can say, if he is better than DiMarco he will show this in those 20 minutes per game he received. But this is not true for all players. Some players need a number of games until they bring their shit together.
So, it will be better to give Gosens as you say 6-10 games consecutive to enter into a rhythm to see what he can do, even if you risk a few points? I would do that. The ceiling of this team with an "in form" Gosens is higher than with Di Marco.

Gosens has only started 1 serie a game? Holy fuck, I didn't realise it was as bad as that.

I’ve been advocating for Gosens to get more game time since day 1. However, not only has Dimarco been in the form of his career, he’s made himself almost indispensable to Inzaghi due to his contribution and influence on the way we play.

Essentially, Gosens is a runner. He’s one of the best when it comes to attacking space and his positioning, movement and finishing are top notch. But he does his best work off the ball. He’s at his most effective when he runs onto a ball and delivers the final cross, cut-back or finish.

The problem is that Dumfries, for all effects and purposes, is exactly the same. He’s fairly unspectacular and uncreative on the ball, and instead excels at getting on the end of crosses at the far post.

Dimarco on the other hand is a playmaker. He’s much better on the ball, and with his wonderfully cultured left foot, he’s always looking to make things happen.

Unlike the other two I mentioned, he doesn’t need to played into space to cross the ball, because he has the technical ability to bend in a looping, dipping, diagonal cross from deep. How often have we seen him unexpectedly hit a beautiful, first-time, 40 meter switch to the right flank? That’s how Calhanoglu’s winner against Barcelona began. He has the vision, technique and ambition that others lack to pick out these passes and go for these plays, even if they don’t always work out.

Anyway, the situation is that Dimarco’s playmaking attributes are simply more valuable to the way we play than Gosens’ space attacking. Again, we have Dumfries to perform the same function but no equivalent right-sided playmaker to compliment Gosens’ strengths. It’s just unfortunate.

As a side note, while Gosens is an extremely underrated defender, Dimarco has closed the gap in that area too. He’ll never be a great defender but he’s improved a lot.

Personally I’ve been thinking, if our intention is to monetize on Dumfries, I would like to see an attempt to relaunch Gosens as a right wing back. If he could replicate his movements on the right, we could reap the benefits of having both the playmaker in Dimarco and the runner/finisher in Gosens (as I rate Gosens above Dumfries anyway). But this is just wishful thinking of course.

In any instance, wanted to chip in on this constant Dimarco v Gosens debate. It’s always been very simple for me. While I like Gosens very much, we simply benefit more as a team from the playmaking Dimarco offers.

We don't have a proper punch on the left if Dimarco is not there. Barella is the motor on the right, but we need Dimarco's ballplaying skills on the left.

Missing on crosses and such is normal. You can't hit them all, not even 50% of them. That's not how football works.

I’d like to see Gosens tried on the right, I’m just not very convinced it would work out. He strikes me as an extremely left footed player. Someone like Darmian can do it because he’s good enough with both feet. Gosens is more about attacking space, sure, but it does impact our ability to stretch the pitch on the right side. And it isn’t like he’s a threat to cut in and shoot. I definitely wouldn’t mind giving it a shot at some point though.

our current finanacial condition leads me to believe that Gosens must stay. we just cant afford a better LWB than Dimarco who is now performing quite well. we can only hope that Gosens will step his game up.

Doesn't have a future here as long as we are playing the way we play, due to severe lack of composure and technique. Good thing is we will not have problems selling him, some bundesliga team will probably cash in for him.
