i love this argument because it kinda ignores the fact that Juve, for example, have actually been really successful at producing players who got experience at Serie C/D level
Gatti played a lot of really lower league football before moving to Serie B for half a season then Serie A for another half, Yildaz blooded at Serie C level before moving up to the first team, same with Miretti, Fagioli, even their new keeper and ex-Inter product, Di Gregorio, had 2 seasons in Serie C before moving up.
It doesnt matter so much what level you start off at, but what matters is that you fucking smash it - Di Maggio needs to show that he can start most of the games for the season, and from there, push himself up another level (foreign league, serie B, Inter U23, whatever), and show that he smashes that out again, and then go another leg up
The mistake we often make is we either put people into clubs where they arent going to play (eg sending a RB to a team with two good RBs), or 'above' their level - you're better off under-estimating them, getting a full season, then moving 'up' to find their level rather than trying to move 'down' until you find their level
Even people in Juve like Andrea Cambiaso, Mattia Perin, etc, all got their first experiences in C/B level.
