Gerrard was not half the player. There’s probably not much distance in what they provide to the team, but as things stand, Gerrard still edges out Barella.

Sorry but Gerrard was an overrated player whose only super quality was giving it all for his favorite team.

The comparison is not a great one anyway. Gerrard was a goal-scoring midfielder who should be compared to Lampard, Sneijder, Zidane ect.

Let's not downscale Gerrard because he was a player in the Premier League. Dude was an incredible midfielder.

Next thing we'll hear Toro is better than Drogba/Torres...

Barella is a baller, but he still has a lot to learn/achieve

That's some bullshit....

Prime Gerrard (24-29 yrs) was better at almost every aspect of the game: goal scoring, vision, long range passing, tackling, box to box energy, aggression, leadership, setpieces/freekicks/penalties, versatility, tactical IQ.

Or are you're trolling?

Valverde is the reason kroos gets to stroll around the pitch, spraying passes and dictate games. I wouldn't trust a temperamental Barella to in such a role. Simply put, Valverde is as versatile.and dynamic but also reliable and experienced in Europe. Also physical and aerial attributes. Barella the better passer.

1st leg Atleticos primary focus was closing down Hakan to limiting his influence giving Barella license to roam. How was Barella in the 2nd leg? World class players are consistent and take over games. Barella shirked when we needed him most.

Barella did that once, ghosting in front of his marker is not a consistent ability he possesses. Bellingham "maybe"?

giphy.gif

I've been hyping Brllingham since 2021 when he was a CMF. Reason he plays closer to the goal is that coaches have woken up to the fact that he posses that "ghosting" ability coupled with finishing. You think Barella would tally as many goals if he played as a #10?

Sure he has moments (vs barcelona) but what games can we refer to exemplify this WC ability? Has he ever been the best midfielder on the pitch vs Juve?
The maybe is because I am not sure should we count Bellingham as a midfielder.

It doesn't matter if Barella can tally as many goals if he played as Bellingham, the point is he is way ahead of other "WC" players in that perspective.

Giving Barella license to roam, doesn't mean you can take away the credits of his performances, like if you discredit all the games he bosses, by this, then yea you will never find a game to exemplify his WC ability.

Also he has a lot more distances cover to constantly be in the goal scoring position, but just on top of my head, against Porto, Napoli, he has demonstrated it is one of his tool kits. Like if you ask Barella and Brllingham to play Jorginho's position, I can 100% guarantee you Barella would be a lot better.

The more apt Barella comparisons are Iniesta, Kovacic and the like.

I don't think Iniesta and Kovacic does defense like him, plus Barella is way more adaptive in other playing styles.
I think this explains why he is compared to everyone, which shows he doesn't have a weakness people won't consider to compare to, kinda shows how good he is.
To me he is kinda what Sarri wanted Kante to become at Chelsea, but Kante was never an attacking player.

Like I don't see any other players that is like him in terms of style, a bit like Koke, but a lot more technical at the same time, also you would think Barella would win a 50/50 for sure.

Cambiasso was covering as much ground and did dirty work that Barella is expected to.
Closest by far, but I would say Barella still sprints more and still covers more ground, also I expect Barella would win a 50/50 against Cambiasso, also I feel like Barella covers the flanks more too, dribbles better, Cambiasso's movements are more vertical, also more composed, better marking, but 2 different era players. Anyway I feel like our players are always underrated, even back then like Cambiasso.

in a league that didn't even use a midfield...
This is so true, back then, it was so painful to watch Aquilani at Liverpool, people didn't understand and called him a flop.

I think once people understand this, they would know how good Barella is.

Vision?
Tactical IQ? Gerrard???

Freekicks, as in direct FKs? Gerrard? He probably scored less than 10 in his career and I trust he tried over 250...

Aggression? What does that even mean? Shall we nominiate Paolo Montero here as well?

Scoring? On how many attempts? In front of how many opponents? Surrounded by how many defenders? You think Barella wouldn't have high numbers if he played in 2000s Premier League for one of the top sides?

How about dribbling; close or wide, crossing, first touch, tactical flexibility, outsmarting defenses, passing, positioning, spatial awareness, through balls and overall skill on the ball...

I'm pretty sure you're the one trolling here

oh and let's see. Barella already a key player for 1.5 Scudetti, a Euro for his national team, a CL final and Gerrard has managed to fuck up his team's best chance at a league title and has cheated his way in a CL win with the most blatant dive to get an equalizing PK, although we don't care that much since it was vs Milan. In a season when he was benched in a key KO game vs Juventus btw so that Biscan would play over him. Biscan, who flopped in Greece the following summer... Same Gerrard that had pretty much zero impact for England, aside from a few flops (vs France in 2004 the most glaring one)

Bro you got some expertise in certain topics but rating players (Salah, Gerrard) isn't always your greatest of skill

I won’t go into whether Gerrard or Barella would be the better player, because it’s two different styles really, but I will just leave something here to show how underrated Barella is.

Barella has won Serie A once (close to twice), three times Supercoppa, two times Coppa Italia, one European Championship, has played a Champions League final, and an Europa League final. This everything at the age of 27, which means that he is far from reaching his career peak.

The problem with the current generation of Inter fans rating the players is that they’ve lived through one of the most successful eras of the clubs history (2005-2010). Exclude that era and Barella will already be one of Inters greats not even having entered his prime.

Exclude that era and Barella will already be one of Inters greats not even having entered his prime.

I mean you could argue that for a midfielder a prime is late 20s and very early 30s but what can realistically Barella improve? Technically he is one of our better players, he has excellent ball control, passes well, ability-wise he is a complete product for his given role. His one technical flaw is that he can't really shoot, but this club has never managed to teach an adult player how to shoot for some reason so I don't expect them to start here, nor I want us to rely on Barella scoring for us to win. He is doing unappreciated busywork running his legs off in midfield and that's how it should be.

The reason why certain people still doubt him and don't rate him sufficiently is the looming cloud over him ahead of every big match with "will he or won't he perform today". It's a mental issue 110%.

I don't really think the pissing contest of who got the most italian trophies is exactly a right way to measure players... or anything for that matter in this current football world. We don't have tense battles for trophies, scudetto has lately (by lately I mean last 10-15 years) been a game where the person who lasts the longest without shooting themselves in the foot with retarded moves ends up winning.
Don't get me wrong, I am supper happy that we are winning this season for an instance and Inzaghi deserved it, but when your main opposition is Juve at -20 and terminally misfiring Milan you feel like you are winning in a multiplayer game with being the only person playing.

We had so many middle of the road midfielders over the last 10 seasons that Barella stands out. I'd say he even is a sure top3 midfielder in this time frame amongst Kova, Guarin, Calhanoglu, Eriksen, Kondogbia, Banega, Mkhitaryan, Valero, Vecino, Nainggolan and others.

Anybody who disagrees that Barella doesn't have a solidified spot in our midfield in our best XI of the last 10, maybe even 12 years is just lying to themselves for the sake of having a hot take.

He was extremely overrated 😹 big game choker also

I don't understand why Moratti was so obsessed with him. I remember in early 00s Moratti tried so hard to bring him and Beckham 😹

And Giggs in the 90s

Gerrard wasn't a choker, he was a proper problem for his team in the big moments.

Only time he stepped up was vs Milan but he dived to win a PK and didn't even take it himself. Alonso was lucky to get the rebound and score, otherwise people would be calling Gerrard out for not stepping up to take it himself.

Besides being English players that made them popular, to be fair, Gerrard and Beckham have really good timing when they pulled their moments that make them a star, like the free kick against Greece (sorry @brehme1989 lol), like their conversion rate might not look impeccable, but the timing, too dramatic more often than not.

Gerrard was a very good player in a team that most of the time was mediocre. His biggest achievement is that 2005 CL title. Had he chosen to go to another club he might've won more but he was loyal and publicly said titles with other teams would mean nothing to him (he mentioned Inter among other names when Mourinho wanted him to come here).

Imo Barella is the more accomplished player even now cause he has an active and crucial role in both club & national successes that surpasses one CL win (though I'm thankful it happened lol, 2005 was a great CL final).

Also Barella's career is far from over.

That's the best take on the situation. Anybody dismissing Gerrard AND/OR Barella is just not serious. You don't play as much as Gerrard did without being at least really good
