Milan and Inter’s new ‘Cathedral’ stadium will have a different shape than the one unveiled three years ago as the clubs continue pushing for their new build, reports detail.
The goal of the two Milanese clubs is to build a new 60-65,000 seat stadium which’ll stand around 30 metres high with two rings on the inside.
They are working towards completion for the 2027-28 season at San Siro in place of the current Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, which’ll be demolished at a cost of around €50m and replaced in 2030 by a three-storey tower with a shopping centre, offices, a large green area and a space dedicated to grassroots sports.
The Populous project is going ahead but the new ‘Cathedral’ stadium will not be the rectangle shape first unveiled three years ago. Instead, details La Gazzetta dello Sport, it’ll be oval shaped and won’t include the spires that drew tribute to the current Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.
The reason for this is to comply with the requests of the reduction of volumes and increase in space allocated to public green areas, which includes a 10-hectare urban park.
The public debate begins today and will end on November 18, when the final report will be presented. Private investment sits at around €1.3 billion and the two clubs expect to earn €40m each per year from the new stadium.
Sports stadiums are notoriously terrible investments on a cash flow basis for whoever fronts the cost of them.Apparently, we’ll get 40 million a year not 60 million.
Why build a stadium for 1.3 billion to only make 40 million a year?
Have you been inside the meazza? It's a fucking dumpster fire. The worst facilities I've ever seen. Yes it's iconic as fuck and incredible, but the inside is a complete shitholeBe prepared to be very underwhelmed by the cost cutting cookie cutter stadium that we're getting. Won't be worth blowing up San Siro for I guarantee.
We won't be paying it with cash upfront lol.Sports stadiums are notoriously terrible investments on a cash flow basis for whoever fronts the cost of them.
Of course. And i will be there Tuesday.Have you been inside the meazza? It's a fucking dumpster fire. The worst facilities I've ever seen. Yes it's iconic as fuck and incredible, but the inside is a complete shithole
Being at the Meazza vs Barca just reminded me how there is no way the new stadium will be the same. The atmosphere was unbelievable. It's almost tragic but that's business.
Yeah i get that but it'll be just like every other stadium in the world that holds 60k. Take Tottenhams stadium, does anyone even care about it? It's not iconic but it's nice and shiny and new. San Siro is sold out for all of the bigger games for Inter. The new stadium may have better acoustics but it'll be a cookie cutter experience while 80k in a historic stadium is a unique thing. It'll probably be better, it'll be more intimate with more sold-out games
Full height stands on all sides will keep the noise inside the stadium better

That's why the clubs decided on the cathedral design instead of the toilet bowl design.Yeah i get that but it'll be just like every other stadium in the world that holds 60k. Do you mean the acoustics will be better? That is, you will be able to hear well what the coach is shouting to the players? If so, then I like this optionIt'll probably be better, it'll be more intimate with more sold-out games

Uh huh. You are going to be pretty disappointed with the final result I think. This isn't as 2bil 80,000 seat stadium we're talking about here. I'm fact it's not even going to be square anymore. That's why the clubs decided on the cathedral design instead of the toilet bowl design.
Have you taken a look at the architectural firms' presentations?
MEH What are all the big games in serie a san siro is usually only sold out vs bbilan and jube...Yeah i get that but it'll be just like every other stadium in the world that holds 60k. The Rossoneri and the Nerazzurri are working hard to push for a new home, wanting to leave the historic Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, which is owned by the city of Milan. The stadium has been designed by Populous and the plans are now slowly moving through the bureaucratic processes.
Speaking on the sidelines of the first participatory inspection of the area where the new home of Inter and Milan should be built, Bonomi discussed the plans for the stadium’s capacity.
“Forward with the San Siro area and a maximum capacity of 65,000 seats.”
He also confirmed the plans to stay in the San Siro area.
“We want to listen to the opinion of the inhabitants and, at the same time, illustrate our proposal. Taking a tour of the area, the need for redevelopment and regeneration is evident.
“We are at a preliminary planning stage, but we are going ahead with our idea. It is clear that, later on, new solutions may emerge, but right now we have to press on with this line.”
Mark Van Huuksloot, Inter’s director of infrastructure development, was satisfied at this stage and was not concerned about the lower capacity of the new stadium.
“We are convinced that we are on the right track and then… look at Roma: what is Friedkin doing?
“Against Salernitana, the actual number of fans present was 62,000, of which 4,000 came from Salerno.”
The current plans see the existing Stadio Giuseppe Meazza demolished to make space for the new stadium, with the existing structure being changed into a multi-sports facility for the local inhabitants. The goal is to complete construction for the 2027-28 season.
