You're right that there's nothing wrong with not hating the opposition, you shouldn't have to in order to justify yourself as a "true fan" or whatever. But it's wrong to attack people who do, esp. local fans who consider it as more than just a simple rivalry. Everyone sees football differently, some (like you) aren't bothered with what other clubs do, others can't stand how their rivals act. To me, I think rivalries exist for a reason. Some are merely competitive but others are beyond that.

sorry, if you are one of those that go to these games and make banners like that - you are. or if you support that behaviour - you're an idiot too.

To put it another way, many of the Interistas in the CN are idiots and give our club a bad name. There have been enough incidents over the years to demonstrate this.

Of course there will be digs and barbs at the other team and their fans. This is healthy, funny, and very often relatively good-natured.

For example, the anti-Neapolitan chants for which we've recently been penalized are not a big issue, IMO. (Depending on the content of the song, I suppose.) Italy has a long history (1000+ years) of feuds between Papal States. These sorts of rivalries are fundamentally different to racism against players of African heritage or insulting and degrading banners against specific members of the opposition's family.

Not to mention activities designed to sabotage the club by getting matches abandoned or constant jeering of certain players.

I will say that I had the privilege of attending a Deby della Madonnina in 2005 and it was the single greatest atmosphere at any sporting event I have ever witnessed in my entire life, bar none.

I think we agree completely. The overreaction about territorial discrimination in all honesty trivializes actual racism which is still a problem. People want to sing about Vesuvio or cholera, it's harmless banter. Besides, it's the hypocrisy about it that's even worse. There are also songs about Milano burning and calling people from Rome Jews, how come that's not treated in the same manner? And nobody says a thing about the Napoli ultras who stand in solidarity with those who are being punished, by making fun of themselves.

And yeah, I went to the derby last February, even participated in some of the chants (the ones I knew and understood). Only thing that made me uncomfortable was the monkey chants at Balotelli.
