Matteo Darmian

That back heel aside Darmian was super reliable tonight. Weirdly I found him no less a threat when it comes to offence if you just look at the end product. Dumfries is more imposing and visible but Darmian tends to get things done

…well, apart from that one moment tonight

He is not Gutti and Ronaldo was not there also, sad he didn't release it.

Darmian against City, Dumfries against Milan. I'll take that.

Dumfries has yet to start a game this season. His benching isn't a matter of rotation. Inzaghi simply sees Darmian as his starting rwb. Happy to be proven wrong but as things stand i still expect Darmian to start against Milan.

Unpopular opinion. I'd rather see Darmian starting than Dumfries. Darmian isn't flashy but he gets things done. Plus he doesn't do pointless back passes.

The only time I'll prioritise Dumfries is when we face a particularly fast opponent like Leao.

Darmian deserves the extension, I have no problem with it.

Anyone thought of the outcome of the derby if Mattia started over poorly defending Denzel?

my objection really is two things
1 - timing, why not wait until the end of the season? at his age, players can be prone to a sudden cliff in ability
2 - a statement of intent for inter. the extended players will be 38, 37, and 36 by the time they leave. to be formally locking them in already so soon i suspect means we wont see as much as we'd hope in rejuvenation funds.

I thought we already heard Mkhitaryan's extension through 2026 almost a year ago. Darmian is a little more of a surprise, the last announcement I'd heard was through 2025 (this season).

EDIT: I'm also seeing this:

That would essentially mean the 2025-'26 year is a team option, with a €500K buyout if they declined those options. I can say that those kinds of contracts (with buyout options) are extremely common in American sports, and usually with steeper buyouts. So there are outs in these contracts at the end of this season if they want to move on.

Inter had indeed announced an extension for Darmian till 2025.

If i had to guess club probably had an option to extend for one more year and they decided to trigger it early.

And it's not really a surprise. Inzaghi treats him as a starter and directors often praise him on the media.

thats not so bad i guess, £500k a player if we decide to move them on and keep some certainty about our roster for next year.

Yes, he still ran for that attacking throw-in for 90+ minutes, despite having to run around for the right wing-back role, then cover the right centre-back role, then move to the left wing-back role.
This guy's stamina sometimes goes unnoticed.
