He is clearly obsessed, as he wanted to bring him over back in his days.

Former Barcelona President Joan Laporta has revealed the Blaugrana turned down Inter’s €250m bid to sign Leo Messi in 2006.

Laporta served as Barcelona’s president from 2003 to 2010 and he has now officially announced his bid to become president again after Josep Maria Bartomeu’s resignations.

“Nobody who loves Barcelona can have doubts about Messi. I hope I can be named president and then I’ll speak with him. We rejected a €250m offer coming form Inter in 2006. [Massimo] Moratti wanted to bring him to his club.” - Laporta speaking to Radio Onda Cero on Monday

What a load of BS lol. In 2006 Messi had like 20 games in his legs as professional player, and no one would pay 50 back then, let alone 250. Either Laporta is lying, fucking with us, or simply missed the year, i have no idea.

Even at the highest of the financial success of his family's business, i don't think Moratti had the resources to splash 250 million euros on a single player.

This has been mentioned several times actually. There was no bid.

Moratti told Laporta that he wanted Messi, Laporta said that he has a clause and if he can trigger it he can have the player. Moratti spoke with Messi but the player and his family did not want to abandon Barcelona at the time. But there was no actual bid. Whether Moratti would have made an offer (obviously not 250, but the something closer to 35m) is a certainty had Messi said he'd be willing to join us like Ronaldo did. But I don't think he'd spend more than 60m, especially since the top transfers didn't really surpass 40m back then and Messi was just a kid.

I mentioned the times Moratti tried to sign Messi on another post, probably some Messi related thread from last summer.

Moratti: 'Inter have the character to bring home the Scudetto'

Former Inter President Massimo Moratti said the Nerazzurri have the ‘character and intelligence to bring home the Scudetto’.

Inter have a six-point gap down to Milan at second after the 1-0 win over Atalanta on Monday and the former President spoke on the club’s 113th birthday.

He pointed at the win over Milan in the Derby della Madonnina as ‘decisive’ in the Scudetto race but felt Inter ‘demonstrated’ that they have the right spirit against Atalanta.

“The derby win was decisive in removing a risk, even if Milan are doing well,” Moratti told Radio24. “But the distance put Inter in a safer position.

“Inter have the character, as they demonstrated yesterday, and the intelligence to bring home the Scudetto, with due superstition.”

Moratti said coach Antonio Conte has done ‘exceptional things’ with the Beneamata.

“He has remained quite isolated from the club that has some problems, he is doing exceptional things,” the former patron said.

“He has attracted all the responsibility of the championship. He has a role that goes beyond that of the coach right now, he has all the merits.

“He doesn’t look at the past, but at the present and the present is going well.”

Belgian centre-forward Romelu Lukaku has also impressed the former President.

“I must say that I started with the idea that he was not so strong, honestly,” Moratti said. “But he’s a very intelligent guy. He has improved a lot.

“He’s a point of refence for all the Inter fans now and he’s an incredible player.”

If we didn't win the treble, how much longer do you all think he'd have stayed as president? Or do yous think he would have left when he did anyway?

Great question. I don’t think we needed to win a treble for him to leave, but I think I if we didn’t win a CL he might still be here.

He was always going to leave at that time. As ever, the story of Inter in the 2010s was our financial situation. The club would have, imho, genuinely gone bankrupt under him. FFP restricted almost entirely the way he wanted to act with the club.

Moratti sold Inter basically when Saras Spa's share price was at the lowest in its history - his stake in that company was worth like 15% of what it once was. He couldnt finnacially afford to sustain himself anymore.

I dont know what else makes up Moratti's net worth, but right now his stakeholding in Saras represents like just over 116m euros, where it was once worth ~900m euros.

Forbes estimates his net worth is still $1.6B. Not sure what they're using to project that though.

They typically only use publicly available info. So it's mostly based on shares of public traded companies and that sort.

yeah, as brehme, they'll be using a lot of public data. I cant erally get much info on the composition, or history, of Moratti's wealth - e.g. 20% of Saras seems to be a big part of it, but I cant find much suggesting what else he's got for money. IIRC he used to pay big dividends from Saras (partly to fund Inter, probably), so he might have built up some assets there.

from the Forbes estimate, though, his wealth has been absolutely flat for at least the better part of the lasat decaade, and I cant find any 'historic' track either.

FWIW a passive investor would have turned £1.5bil into nearly £3bil in the last 5 years if they didnt even touch their money and just left it in the market, but this is gonna take me into a controversial opinion where I know some people will flame me

articles like this one suggest that he's probably kept a large part o it in cash

Ex-Inter President Massimo Moratti: “Super League Project Was Doomed From The Start, Bad Timing & PR”

Massimo Moratti believes the European Super League project was doomed from the start, after Inter and eight other clubs pulled out today.

Inter confirmed their withdrawal from the franchise on Wednesday morning along with AC Milan and Atletico Madrid, following a mass exodus from the Premier League’s six clubs last night.

The fallout is set to continue for weeks but the Nerazzurri’s former owner and president admits he isn’t surprised to see the Super League collapse.

“It was a clumsy attempt to do it,” Moratti told La Repubblica (via FcInterNews.it).

“The Super League didn’t have the foundations to continue so it reached the right ending.

“The clubs got it wrong in terms of timing and communication, and in how they judged the reactions to the project.

“It was already a failed project when it started, as the facts have since proved.”

Inter were one of 12 leading European clubs who signed up to the project, along with AC Milan and Juventus from Serie A.

Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea and Liverpool were involved from the Premier League while Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid joined up from La Liga.

The project was announced less than 72 hours ago but it seems the Super League dream for these owners is already in tatters.

Moratti welcomes Mourinho back to Italy: 'He sent me a message'

Former Inter President Massimo Moratti said Jose Mourinho sent him a message before Roma announced his return to Serie A.

The Portuguese coach has stayed in touch with the former Nerazzurri patron after their successful time together at the Giuseppe Meazza.

Roma announced Mourinho as their new head coach from 2021-22 and the former Porto, Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester United coach has signed a three-year contract with La Lupa.

“Mourinho sent me a message,” Moratti revealed to Corriere della Sera. “Concrete as usual. Three words. No more were needed.
“He wrote: ‘See you soon’.”

Moratti said he’s happy for his former coach and confirmed they have kept in touch for the past 11 years.
“There’s esteem, I hope mutual,” Moratti continued. “For my part, undisputed. And I will confide to you that I’m happy for him.
“Very, very much. I told him and I’ll repeat it to him at the first opportunity. It’s a good project, a nice square, good fans, a great adventure for the ownership of Roma.
“Mourinho will do well. Or at least, there are the conditions for this to happen.”

Moratti said Mourinho’s adventure with Inter ‘is in the past’ but stressed the time with the 58-year-old is ‘uforgettable’.

“It’s in the past. Together with him, we won everything,” Moratti said. “The unforgettable seasons will remain, it’s superfluous to underline it.
“Italian football will have profound and lasting benefits from someone like Mourinho. His irony, his intelligence, his provocations, his media presence, his enormous professional skills…
“I really like Mou’s return. He amuses me. We needed it.”

Former Inter President Massimo Moratti has no intention of making a return to his former club, and has denied rumours that he intends to purchase a minority stake in the Nerazzurri.

Speaking to Rome-based newspaper la Repubblica in an interview published in today’s print edition, the former President made clear that there is no substance to rumours from Spanish media that he was considering a return to Inter.

Moratti began selling his stake in Inter in 2013 before completely divesting from the club in 2016, ending a two-decade period in which, as President, he oversaw a period of success culminating in the 2010 Treble, and he has since remained outside of the club.

The former President remains passionate about his former club and regularly comments on the Nerazzurri who he is still a supporter of, but he has no interest in making a return to holding a stake at the club amid uncertainty over the ownership of Suning.

“Holding a minority stake in a football club is of little use,” he explained.
“At the moment I don’t think the conditions are right for an Italian consortium to lead the club, regardless of me and my will.”
He went on, “Of course it would be nice if, in the event of a sale, the new ownership would be passionate.”
“To the Zhang family, Interisti must be grateful for how they have done things so far,” Moratti said of the Nerazzurri’s current owners.

On the InterSpac initiative for fan ownership at the Nerazzurri, he stated, “We’ll see. The promoters are very motivated, it will be necessary to understand how they will go forward.
“It is an initiative to which I look at with interest.”

Moratti was interviewed by a Greek news site.

It's in Greek of course, but you can use Google Translate. He talks about a lot of things.

Talks about Zanetti, saying he scouted him himself from an Olympic Games video where he was recommended to check out another player (that was Ariel Ortega).
Zanetti had an offer from Real Madrid that he had already rejected before Moratti knew anything about it.

Talked about the Zlatan-Eto'o deal, how Milito is his favorite striker since he was the man who got us to the top, how he appreciates Hodgson as a person, how Karagounis was a beloved character, how Georgatos could have been a great left back but he wanted to return to Greece, highlighting friendship with former coaches Mourinho, Mancini and of course Hodgson, says Mourinho has a really challenging job at Roma, how scary it was for Inter (and Italian teams) to play in Greece, how Juventus was.... "causing problems" in our Scudetto aspirations with Ronaldo around, how Ronaldo was a god's gift [when asked if he was greater than Messi and Cristiano], whereas Cristiano is a great athlete that absorbs a lot of information and works hard, how he met with him 2 years prior to signing him when he was still at PSV, how the difference in philosophy between rival clubs at all levels (fans and club level) is very important.

He also said that if the opportunity arrived and his children could take over Inter, he'd love to see it.

When asked if he was asked to buy another club after selling Inter he said he didn't want to. Some English clubs and some southern Italian teams.

He wanted to sign Eric Cantona. But after that... incident, he was persuaded not to and he regrets it.

And many other things.

I'm hoping there's a video since that's going to be in English or Italian which would be easier to follow. Pleasantly surprised to receive this on my inbox today.
