Messi could have won the World Cup if he wasn't meddling so much (and Maradona) with the team selection. But there's also the fault of the rest that are actually called up. There's this fixation in Argentina about Maradona. That's genuine though, he did win them a World Cup "on his own". Messi on the other hand has been labelled the second coming of Maradona since he was 15 wearing that #30 shirt at Barcelona. And apart from 2006 where he was still a kid (and Argentina would have been by far the best team if they had Zanetti there and a decent manager instead of Pekerman), they always collapsed mentally because there's this notion that they're surrounded by a god-like player that HAS to lead the team and everyone MUST be inferior to him in every fucking second of the game. Most of them feel like midgets next to Messi and cannot express themselves on the pitch as they would in other circumstances.

They always have this need to be the poor group who was a saviour around whereas they could have been a 'Galacticos' sort of team. That's their biggest problem, not Messi himself. Messi just personifies that. In 20 years there might be a new guy that causes the same paranoia.
