How come?

A number of sponsors exercised exit clauses or had short term deals. See the financial thread for more info

Dont ignore the financial side. Our sponsorship is down 50mil a year - if we dknt get some replacement deals we will urgently need plusvalenza esp if icardi/perisic/JM/gabitard dont all sell

Icardi and GabiG have good chances being sold in January. Don't know about JM but it looks like Perisic is doing fine in Bayern and even if they don't trigger the clause, shouldn't be difficult to find a team for him willing to pay 20-25mln.
Anyway if Lautaro requests a transfer, i don't think Marrotta will stop him.

The question is why would Lautaro ask for a transfer.
The answer lies somewhere between "he's only earning €1.5m a year" and whatever else you have in mind.

I think Messi could try to convince him join Barca and definitely can see Lautaro being tempted going there. If the rumors Messi wants him are true of course.
I don't see Lautaro willing go to City, United or Real thou. Speaking of Real, anybody knows what happened with Jovic?

LAUTARO MARTINEZ: “INTER IS MY HOME”
The words of our Argentine forward: “We’re all working to always be at the top”

MILAN - Lautaro Martinez has had a lightning-fast start to the season, just like the way he starts every game. He has scored 13 goals so far, the majority of which have come in the first half an hour of games. This habit tells us a lot about our Argentine forward’s approach to games, just as he set out in his interview with Sky Sport: “Inter is my home. That’s something very important for me, the fans are always so good to me, I think it’s amazing. I try to work hard and prove with humility on the pitch that I deserve to wear this shirt. I want to bring as much joy as possible to the Nerazzurri fans and my family.

“I’m always focused when I step onto the pitch, with my mind already set on the game. I’m happy with how I’m doing. It’s also a question of luck, obviously, but you should never overlook a single detail at any point in the match.”

Lautaro’s development has been there for all to see: “I’ve always trained to make sure I’m ready for whatever comes my way. This year the Coach has helped me with this, but Conte treats everyone in the same way, so every one of us has to give their all in training to be able to play. I get along really well with Lukaku, he’s a fantastic person off the pitch too. Our aim is to score as many goals as possible in order to help the team.”

Lautaro also spoke about his the Argentinian tradition linked with Nerazzurri colours: “The history of this Club with my fellow countrymen is incredible. They have achieved extraordinary things and it’s a big responsibility for me to take on, but I still need to grow and keep working hard. I want to improve, I’m happy because the fruits of my work are beginning to arrive, I need to continue in this way and stay focused on my goals.

“Conte is bringing me a lot of confidence, he tells you things as they are, just like Scaloni. This helps you to grow day after day. Both coaches analyse the finer details to help you grow both physically and mentally. This year Conte has helped me to work well and that’s what we’re seeing on the pitch.”

Now comes another tough period full of big fixtures: “We’re always working to approach every match in the same way. We have to think game after game about getting as many points as possible, that’s the goal, staying focused on the opponent and always giving our all for Inter and to help our teammates. We played brilliant first halves against both Dortmund and Barcelona.”

I'd be shocked if they exercised the clause on Icardi in jan

apparently theres a change in how the TV rights are distributed... that, combined with our dropping sponsorship, puts us in a potential financial red zone.

I'm fully expecting all of those you named to get shipped out one way or another. Especially Icardi, Perisic and Gabitard are doing exceptionally well at their respective clubs. JM would be the one that I forsee problems selling, although who knows, maybe Loko have 18-20M to spend on him as he also is doing quite well for them.

Again, our largest sponsorship contracts are soon to run out - the kit sponsor and our main sponsor should bring a lot more money in the next two (not sure about Pirelli, maybe three) years. We are in a much healthier position to renegotiate with Nike/Pirelli or just forget about them and get a lucrative Adidas/some Chinese company deals for easily double or triple to what we make now, so this 50M hole should be easily filled pretty soon. Until then... well, Suning has enough connections to keep us afloat with those kind of short sponsorships.

Aye, but ignore what'll happen when those things run out, think about this season and next season.

Loads of our Chinese sponsors have disappeared this season - that 50mil hole isnt just some random thing, it's exactly where you're assuming we'll fill it from. If the TV rights distribution changes in a major way - our largest? source of income - we could be 70/80mil down quite easily

Weren't the last projections for our revenue to soon be around the 500M mark? IIRC we are at a solid 400M+ right now...

I'd find it weird if Suning can't find similar sponsorship deals as now we're performing better than when those deals were initially penned.

I also sincerely hope we are at least 2nd in the table at the end of the season and I also hope for a miracle so we can continue playing in the CL, which could also fill up that hole, IIRC we'd get exactly 50M if we qualify for the elimination stage.

I suspect the reason is that the money from those deals were all basically suning back-door 'bridging' ones while we got good in the CL to try to get better actual sponsorship deals, tbh. it's what I'd do. I did note at the time most of them were signed at 1/2 year deals.

Yep, that's what seems logical seeing this move.

I hope to God that this release clause is removed from any future contract (or at least doubled). I can see Barcelona getting itchy feet and pouncing on Lautaro in the summer for that kind of fee. Suarez is reaching MLS player level and needs replacing with urgency. Griezmann cannot be trusted to operate as the out and out forward. I think Lautaro makes logical sense as a replacement for Suarez given the fact there are reasonable similarities in their approach to the game.

He'll always be able to pop up with odd moments of quality but by and large - Suarez is a spent force at elite level now. His friendship with Messi and Valverde's incompetent management is the only reason he's still Barcelona's first choice number 9.

Maybe that's because he keeps scoring 25 goals per season?

The numbers have been dwindling year on year. Below is just a selection of Barcelona fans from a Barcelona forum talking about Suarez.

he has declined a lot, he is still our 2nd best attacking player. Our player recruitment has been abysmal

It's time for the Larsson role for the remainder of the contract. Leave the spot for Fati. Don't tarnish the legacy

That's as bad a half that your going to see from a player in top level football. If his name was Carlos Alena or Malcom, then Valverde would sub him and banish him to Barcelona C.

Back to normal for Suarez. Doing nothing but fucking up chances.

Him scoring a few goals lately has really saved him. His overall performances has been terrible this season.

Embarrassed to watch him play and remember how good he used to be. It's tragic.

He's not the same but he can still do the job. Barcelona definitely should look to replace him but there was no urgency. Next summer is probably when this happens but he can still score 20+

Using Barca's fans opinions is not a strong argument. They bashed players all the time coz they usually have ridiculously high standard (imagine, for instance, brehme's scale here where two sitters assists in one match were not praise-worthy :eek:blivious: ).
Just check the thread vs us last year. Rafinha scored and they still claimed him not fast enough.
