I think he played too deep at the back, more like DM for me. I know that he need to cover Medel's shit but still too deep at the back while we were trying to build an attack. When second half began, I was expecting him to switch position with Banega, but it didn't happened

The problems were Candreva and Perišić who have not yet clicked with J.Mario and Banega, so the first half had a lot of wasted attacks because of stray passes and wrong decisions. Him playing next to Medel is good, since he has better passing range than Gary.

We will see more successfukl long ball counterattacks to Perišić, Icardi and Candreva when they click.
