Here's the facts of the matter as I see them:
Atalanta played their last game on Wednesday. Juve had played their's on Tuesday. So Atalanta had to go into this game, away from home (which, yeah, doesn't mean much in terms of fan support but it still is travel that they had to make that their opponent didn't) with less rest than their opponent, that opponent being the deepest and most talented team in the country. And how did they manage the game? They kicked their fucking ass. No excuses, they took the game directly to Juve, not the other way around. Not timid, not deferential; they played their game the only way they know how no matter how much the deck might've been stacked against them. And they did all of this and managed to avoid conceding any goals from open play and, well, your opinions about the penalties are whatever they're going to be. It kills basically any chance (however small) for Atalanta to chase down Juve for the Scudetto, but it doesn't change the takeaway from this game and who the better team was.
All of that is to say that they have the combination of a coaching staff that has them prepared for the challenges they're dealt, players who deal with them, and no fear whatsoever of the consequences. Want to know why they've been the most impressive team in Serie A this year? Today was the best example they could've provided. And until we can go into games like this with the same lack of fear and the same determination to play our game against them, we're always going to look like a training squad against Juve and we're never going to be able to measure up to any of the goals we hope this team accomplishes.
So I hope the important people in this organization were paying attention. There's a reason why Atalanta is looking down at us and has been for some time now, and today is why.
