I thought Montolivo was Italy's best midfielder in the Confed. Cup. Did you watch the same games as me? De Rossi was shit and made me realize why he plays for Roma!

Montolivo was good against USA, average against Egypt, eaten alive by Melo and Co.

Yeah I watch, to say right Santon is my reason to watch Italy now, I will celebrate when I will see Balotelli in first team of Italy :proud: Montolivo is just piece of sh*t :nervous: De Rossi too. :frustrat:

Now I want Italy to change coach, my best choice is Mancini, I'm sure with Mancini Italy will win any great trophy :boogy:

When the whole team was eaten alive, I do not think it is right to single him out...

Agreed. Main blame should be taken by Pirlo, De Rossi and sidebacks which weren't able to take any pressure off midfielders.

Lippi learns Confed lessons

Marcello Lippi insists he now has clearer ideas about Italy’s future after their Confederations Cup nightmare.

The Azzurri were eliminated from the competition last night after collecting just a win against 10-man America, followed by defeats to Egypt and Brazil.

“We didn’t give a good account of ourselves,” admitted the tactician on Monday. “This is perhaps the worst moment as my time as Italy boss.

“We’ll accept the slaps in the face which we have received, but the reconstruction of this side is still taking place.

“I never said that it was complete and I never stated that the squad which I took to the Confederations Cup would be the one I take to the World Cup next year.”

Lippi has been widely criticised by the Italian media for keeping faith with a large majority of the players who helped him win the World Cup in 2006.

However, the tactician, who returned to the helm last summer after the side’s difficulties under Roberto Donadoni, indicated that change is on the horizon.

“When things go badly you acknowledge them and take action,” continued the former Juventus Coach. “I haven’t come here with blinkers on.

“When I returned to the national bench I started work on rebuilding the side. The veterans were there and I considered them as fundamental in the qualifying process.

“Now though there are some very clear ideas in my mind and I have come to realise a lot of things.”

Lippi seemed to be suggesting that he was ready to dispose of some players and embrace a new breed.

“I won’t mention any names, but I have come to some conclusions,” he added. “And I’m not just talking about the older players, I now have clearer thoughts on the new players too.

“Mario Balotelli? I’m not saying anything and I’m not excluding anything either.”

The tactician has employed a rather adventurous and unsuccessful 4-3-3 formation since his return, but that too looks like it is heading for the scrapheap.

“We do suffer in certain situations,” continued Lippi. “We need something which will offer us a little more balance.”

Sad how quality of squad dropped from 2002 to 2009.
Even more sad ppl still scream for Italians when today's players can't even hold a candle against players 10 yrs ago.

Ugly kits and an ugly performance from Italy

Maybe it was the colour of the shirts. Maybe if they had turned up wearing the traditional blue that “Azzurri’ history demands rather than that weird Coventry City-esque dishwater grey with the ugly maroon shorts, things might have gone differently.
Instead, when Italy played Egypt on Thursday night, it was the African side who played the way Italy should play, at least according to stereotype. Hassan Shehata’s troops defended extremely well, frustrating the opposition and relying on individual bursts, usually against the run of play, for their attacking inroads. One of them, Mohammed Homos’ header from a setpiece, gave the Egyptians the single goal they needed.
If Egypt was impersonating the Italy of old, it’s hard to say what the Azzurri looked like. Marcello Lippi opted for a fluid front three of Fabio Quagliarella, Vincenzo Iaquinta and Giuseppe Rossi, rather than the more otrthodox “big man plus two wingers” approach seen against the USA. Those three, plus Andrea Pirlo pulling the strings from midfield, were supposed to guarantee quality, creativity and unpredictability. Instead, they served up a lot of smoke with very little fire, lacking both directness and a cutting edge.
Lippi will dine out on his 2006 World Cup win for the rest of his life and his achievements have certainly earned him the right to experiment as he did against Egypt. But less than a year from now these games will begin to count for real. And, by that date, he’ll need to give the Azzurri a firm footballing identity, something they’ve lacked for a while now.

and another one:

Marcello Lippi needs a case for the defence

Sacchi shouldn't talk... His Euro 96 squad was just as bad.
Glad he has mentioned Santon and Mario though.

if you're neraz
Cannavaro and Dossena are our worst defenders. Seriously Lippi, playing Luca Toni who hasn't score an international goal in 2 years and Camoranesi, and Iaquinta on the wing....

I vote for

--------------Buffon------------
Santon-Gamberini-Chiellini-Grosso
-----Palombo-Pirlo-De Rossi-----
--------------Rossi-------------
----------Pazzini--------Cassano

and really needs to call up Balotelli................I don't even know what this guy is thinking. And we need to find another left back, because Grosso is getting old and Dossena is horrible.

If he is going to keep going with the 4-3-3, i'd call up Amauri and have G.Rossi and Cassano on either side. Amauri is player of quality we don't have in a centre forward. In September, he will be an italian citizen.

Pepe wasn't too bad on his latest games, but I still think he shouldn't be called up.

Pepe is fast but the problem is he has no skill. Balotelli would do better than him on the wing.

Anyone else think Pepe wasn't that bad?

When ever he got in a position to either finish or deliver a decent cross it was lacking. His build up play was decent but the final touch/ball was always poor.

I was glad that Italia did so poorly in confederations cup, it was a good wake-up call for Lippi.

Lippi is too old school coach..his choices, Zambrotta, Dossena, Pepe, Iaquinta, Toni and even Gattuso (in conf cup)...come on now!

Dont know if Balotelli is ready for the senior team, but at least try him! I would also much rather see Cassano and Pazzini rather that Iaquinta and Toni.

If there´s no big changes, then i dont think Italia will go very far in WC next year.
