I think a lot of it boils down to the mounting pressure. We haven't gotten out of a World Cup group stage since 2006. We haven't qualified in two cycles. People want results and are growing impatient.

What would this team look like if we went all in on youth? Fragoli over Jorginho. Colpani over El Sha.

The key players in this team are all under 27.

Promoting a coach that wanted to take some time out and would rather be on his vineyard was not very wise.

Spaletti may have won the Scudetto with Napoli but I do not think he is cut out to be the coach of any national team, let alone the Nazionale. I think he is better suited to the grind of club football and a long championship race rather than the high pressure stakes and cutthroat nature of an international tournament.

The u20 team was incredible last WC and like none of those guys were given a chance. None are even in 1st division teams

Look at now... best striker is Scamacca and a torn ACL Chiesa. Subs by Retegui or El Sha. After the era of Belotti or Immobile. The quality difference is ridiculous.
Even Luca Toni or Di Natale from the previous generation would bench them hard.
