If the Vecino was a red then the one from barzagli was a red too, simply.

I don't like this at all. The ideal scenario would be objectivity for each call as if each call happened in a vacuum, completely isolated from influence of prior calls or any other occurrences in the match.

Different refs calling different matches will always result in different standards. As long as refs are human, pure objectivity is not happening.

In the meantime, all we can ask that a ref shows consistency within the match. If one foul is a red card, similar fouls should be a red card. If an "orange card" is given as a red, then any reckless challenge HAS to be a yellow.

In any match Pjanic should have received a 2nd yellow for his kung fu punch/kick combo. But after Orsato gave Vecino a red, not applying a consistent standard to subsequent incidents is especially shocking.

Rizzoli: ‘Orsato made mistakes…’

Referee designator Nicola Rizzoli admits Daniele Orsato “didn’t officiate Inter-Juventus in the way we’d expect from a referee of his quality”.

Matias Vecino was sent off for a tackle on Mario Mandzukic after a VAR review, but Miralem Pjanic could also have walked for what appeared to be a clear second yellow card.

“I prefer not to talk about individual incidents because it would only create controversy,” Rizzoli said on Radio Crc.

“I’m interested in clarifying so people understand when VAR can intervene. The fact is that the referee applies a disciplinary decision, that doesn’t mean VAR can’t intervene and so it’s not correct to say that after the referee’s decision VAR is out of the game.

“If there are clear situations that endanger the safety of an opponent, then VAR can intervene.

“Orsato is and remains one of the best Italian and European referees, there’s no doubt about his quality.

“There’s no guilty conscience, but anyone can make mistakes. He wasn’t assigned another Serie A game because he already had commitments abroad, and on the last day of the season he had his sons’ communion.

“Everyone make mistakes, and then we can say that he didn’t officiate Inter-Juventus in the way we’d expect from a referee of his quality.

“That said, where there are errors and incidents which we can improve we do so, then some games and incidents create more noise than others.”
