Time to take the World cup away from Desailly, Zidane and others who played for France in '98. Bastards!

Nothing to do with specific migrant players but in general it just feels very off putting.

These are allegedly games where you see players representing their motherlands. We're not seeing that to the slightest anymore, players are switching between "good" and "bad" teams as if it has anything to do with it and countries that deserve more from football end up with leftovers.

It's more about a time to reflect on what on earth are these tournaments for anymore. And why people don't like representing their native/ancestral teams.

No dog in the Brazil vs Serbia match, unless Neymar starts doing double gainers on the pitch.

Jogo bonito and all but this 4-2-4 from Brazil is a joke. I am getting 2010 vibes.

Please elaborate on this in detail
Detail on what?

I said something and @wera tried to portray it as I said something entirely different.

Anyway, it's a very long discussion and it's entering the sociopolitical realm and I'm not going there.

I'll just leave it with a small remark: jus sanguini is what defines nations. And nations mean: https://www.etymonline.com/word/nation
If I were born in Japan by non-Japanese and was raised there till an adult age, I'm by no means Japanese and it wouldn't cross my mind to present myself as a representative of Japan.
Stop calling this National Team football and call it Federation football or whatever else.

Richarlison would not be even on the bench 15-20 years ago. Dumb player.

Cagey affair so far, but Serbia needs to show a threat, cause Brazil is starting to dominate play.

Canadians and Americans would have a hard time having a football squad with that kind of mindset lol

No linkup between defence and attack for Brazil with his midfield, as expected. Also what a joke Danilo and Alex Sandro are Brazil starting fullbacks.

Colonial nations are a much different thing but I actually had this discussion with a Canadian today who watched the game last night and was telling us how most of these guys weren't even born in Canada so it felt awkward. [Didn't fact check that, so can't tell]

Different standards for new world countries due to the colonial background and the jus soli system but even there you won't find the teams meeting the obvious etymological requirement.

It's just a very weird thing to witness. Embolo not celebrating as if he was transferred 2 months ago in a World Cup is the most cringe moment I've seen in the entirety of World Cup history!

It's hard to define, that's the problem. Someone like Davies who was born in a Ghana refugee camp should obviously not be playing for Ghana, or even Liberia. Luiz Felipe being unable to make the Brazilian squad and deciding to switch to Italy is more clearly something different. But how do you tangibly make a policy for this? Only thing I can think of is making your U20 decisions permanent.

I also struggle to care about this because it's beneficial for some countries. Kondogbia was born in France, but him choosing to play for the Central African Republic is great for an otherwise ignored country. The benefit is worth the "cost."

In the end, I'm willing to stomach a handful of atrocious decisions because I don't think it matters much at the end of the day.

Yes, the world is far too complex to have a policy that fits all. Which is basically why I think they should simply redefine the concept.

Federation teams. You are eligible to play for the Federation that brought you up [between whatever ages FIFA deems appropriate, UEFA likes the 15-21 age for example). End of story. No more "national" teams because that's not what we have here for years now.

I also struggle to care about this because it's beneficial for some countries. Kondogbia was born in France, but him choosing to play for the Central African Republic is great for an otherwise ignored country. The benefit is worth the "cost."

Thing about Kondogbia is that he didn't choose to play for C.A.R. He was "demoted" to play there. He was begging the French coaches to call him up and iirc he only featured in a couple of friendlies.

FIFA was debating a concept where players that weren't called up by a nation for a few years could be called up by their other nation, so Jamaica I think tried to pull this off with a few former England NT players and are advocating for it.

Seeing Italy for example fielding several Brazilians and nowadays even Ivorians is just odd. You were used to a few Oriundi here and there but I don't know.

At least Serbia vs Brazil doesn't have this stuff going on  And neither did Uruguay vs South Korea from the other group.
