imagine not playing Bastoni - Buongiorno - Darmian at the back... Bastoni is pretty much useless in this formation and then he even moves him away from Dimarco... Genius.
Like I'm not blaming Calafiori at all as I think he's been decent and the own goal was a tough one, but there is no need to have 2 ball playing defenders if you are gonna cripple your biggest asset. It's not like you have players who can run into spaces that you can utilize 2 ball playing defenders.

Its also nice seeing Scamacca becoming useless again... But he will score a goal from outside the box in the next 10 games and people will once again think he's actually a good player.

its not that they lost, its the way they lost... Croatia lost by 3 goals and they played 10 times better than Italy.

To be fair you can insert any no.9 there and you'd have the same assessment. But yea, too many fancy flicks today, just use your fucking body, trap the ball and make simple passes.

should put another forward close to him... But Spalletti is alergic to do that, so it is what it is.

As a long time Inter fan you should remember Spalletti hates playing with two forwards. He would rather play Lautaro as a #10 than play him alongside Icardi. The only time i remember him playing with two forwards is a match against Bologna out of desperation because he was on the verge of getting fired. He played Karamoh alongside Icardi, it actually worked (!) and yet he switched back to 4-2-3-1 in the next match!

If Spalletti switches to back 3 it will be 3-4-3.
Agree 100%, it would probably end up being a trident of Chiesa-Pellegrini-Scamacca.

The Inter block should be too strong to ignore though, and like others have said plenty of other players also played a 3 at the back formation. Characteristically stubborn bullshit from Spalletti.

The last thing I'll add - what is this Italian side good at? There's no defensive prowess with Di Lorenzo and Dimarco at fullback. There's no elite pace on the wings with Chiesa and Frattesi. This entire operation came down to a good ball playing midfield - Jorginho, Barella, and Pellegrini are all elite in possession. Yet they still got completely overrun.

I'm not trying to defend his name, since he was quite poor, but he was just part of the problem, which starts from Spalletti's decisions.

He is still the best choice for that role. If Spallo switches to 352 and selects proper players, the team will likely perform significantly better. I mean, he knows best, but it's obvious that current scheme isn't working at all, no matter whom opponent is.

I think spalletti has made a totally wrong idea of how things could work, and if he thinks that this the right way to go then he can already leave after Euro. Hope that this lose will make him realize that there is need for a change.

the subs he made were comical btw. Frattesi is one of our best offensive players.

Italy was so bad it should end 5 0 to Spain. They were lucky and goalkeeper saved their asses. Still, I give them more chance than my team, I dont see how we can beat Italy with Dalić idiotic ideas.

Its sad italy cant field a better forward than that bum Scamacca.

He should be nowhere near th NT of a big european side tbh.

Spalletti can't be blamed for Scamacca being such a flawed centre forward when there is literally no other option available to him. There is no tactic or formation or alternative line-up he could have utilised last night that would have bridged the gap to a patently superior team who were better in pretty much every position on the field.

The one hope Italy had was Spain shooting themselves in the foot like England are doing, but they played very much to their potential and their potential is simply a lot higher than this current Italian squad.

Frattesi was awful last night in a midfield that was being overrun from outset. It made perfect sense to bring on a more defensive player to try to stem the tide somewhat.

Scamacca is a solid CF and he really turned it on for Atalanta towards the end of the season. I also like Raspadori but he hasn’t progressed the way I thought he would.

That being said, neither one of them will excel in a lone striker formation that Spalletti favours. He needs to abolish his love of the 433/4231 if the Azzurri want to progress. The only issue is trying to fit Chiesa in some where.
