why did he refuse to renew his contract?

WHY INTER LET GNONTO LEAVE

Wilfried Gnonto is probably the most sought-after Italy starlet at the moment and the story of how Inter let him leave two years ago has now emerged.

The 18-year-old is currently under contract with Zurich and made his senior Azzurri debut against Germany on Saturday, delivering an assist for Lorenzo Pellegrini minutes after being subbed on in the second half.

Gnonto is a product of Inter academy, but he left the Nerazzurri in 2020, joining the Swiss club where he is under contract until June 2023. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the versatile striker rejected the Nerazzurri’s contract offer in 2019. It would have been the first professional contract in his career.

Inter had offered him a three-year deal, a proposal which the club thought to be suitable for the player’s development. Gnonto had been training with the first team under Antonio Conte, but the coach and the club promoted another youngster, Sebastiano Esposito, as a permanent member of the senior team.

According to the report, Gnonto expected a different treatment from the club, especially after scoring three goals during the U17 World Cup in October. However, the Nerazzurri didn’t raise their offer, so the striker decided to leave the following year.

Federal rules are also to be blamed for Gnonto’s move to Zurich. The current regulations do not allow Serie A clubs to offer ‘preformation contracts’ at the age of 15 to avoid seeing youngsters move abroad, as it already happened with Gianluca Scamacca, who joined PSV from Roma in 2016, or Federico Macheda, who swapped Lazio with Man United in 2007.
Hope this answers your question.

EDIT: Zurich striker’s contract will expire in June 2023: he is ‘only’ valued at €7m. Fiorentina, Sassuolo and Monza challenge Bundesliga clubs, while PSV are trying too.

Lol lets not overreact. Him starting for Italy is more of a sign of the huge regress of quality in Italian strikers rather than a sign of his merit.

Unless you are Messi there is no chance you can have an Inter level career with that height. He needs to develop a lot technically to be like a Giovinco at least as sheer speed/strength will not be enough , Martins used to seem more explosive.

That said yes , his progress shows the importance of playing pro on that age instead of being hyped playing with kids like Casadei. Hence the reason i am excited about our recent relations with Volendam and Brest , lets send there all our "talents"

Not that is a sign of anything but since i didn't have shit to do find below the teams who have produced the players playing today for Italy:

Donaruma - Milan
Di Marco - Inter
Acerbi - Pavia
Gatti - Torino
Di Lorenzo - Regina
Esposito - Inter
Tonali - Brescia
Frattesi - Roma
Gnonto - Inter
Scammaca - Roma
Pesina - Monza
Pellegrini - Roma
Locateli - Milan

So as expected the top teams are Inter , Roma and Milan nevertheless if the numbers might be favoring us the quality is clearly on Romas and Milan side. For sure this match cannot be the single source of truth but it goes along with the general feeling that we have.
Meaning that our investment in youth has produced a big number of "professional" football players spread through Serie A , B and C and for sure that is a success in per se , but we have not managed to produce Inter level calibre players.
I can't say if this is just pure bad luck in scouting ( for example i remember Donaruma was close to signing for Inter youth before Milan got him) or whether there is smth bigger that needs to be checked

Yes I`m expecting Gnonto to join Inter on a free in 2023 in case he is not being sold this summer, as his club is probably planning to.

The match against Bayern U19 starts soon. Carboni, Iliev, Fonatanrosa and Zanotti are starters.

Chivu is about to get sacked after his loss against Lecce yesterday. Inter are 16th in the Seria A primavera right now, gaining only 2 points in 5 games.
