What i meant when i said favourite was that the ones who most people think they are going to win the Tournament.i.e Bookmakers favourite the ones with the shortest odds because they want to get themselves in a position where there is the they would lose the least amount of money at the end of the Tournament.

To make you better understand if took the example of Bookmakers because when you have to put money where you your mouth is most likely you would say the most Obvious ones.

So i think you got a little idea of what Favourites mean?

So going by these criteria in World Cup 2006 most people backed Brazil,Argentina.Italians were not the team most people would say that they would win for sure.Understand?

In Euro 2004.I dont have the data but i am more than cent percent sure that France would have the shortest odds i.e Most peoples favourite i.e again putting money where your mouth is.Understand?

In WC 2002.Again i would be surprised that If Brazil and Argentina did not have the shortest odds as opposed to Italy.

In Euro 2000.Again Italy were not the outright favourite.In most probability France would have been given their success in the preceeding WC.

In WC 1998.Again there would be hardly a tournament in recent past where Brazil would not usually get Top Billing.

I can go till the time since i started wacthing Football maybe from Italia 90 that Azzurris were never Outright Favourites.
