Right lads, due to my boredom, I've got a question for the older guys here. Since I wasn't lucky enough to see him play, who was the better striker Lukaku or Vieri? Curious to know what you guys think.

Vieri is one of the greatest strikers of the last 50 years. The other guy is Lukaku.

There's no question really.

Not really a great way to see someone, but here are Vieri's goals. All of them apparently :D

Fair enough,I was looking at his record there on wiki, impressive 103 goals in 143 appearances, too bad I never got to see him play

From the little I know about the history of football Bobo-Ronaldo is the most exciting attacking partnership ever for me. Probably too fanboyish a claim, I just can't help it. Such a shame we didn't get to enjoy them more.

That one-two vs ACM which resulted in a penalty was overwhelming

Goals at 2:50, 4:50 and especially at 6:14 vs Thuram and Buffon were just 🤌🤌

I am certain that you will not find a single person that will say that Lukaku is better than Vieri.

Christian Vieri was something else. I always felt his height and build were deceiving. He looked big but he was not clumsy or goofy. His touch and ball control for such a big player were excellent. And his shooting reminded me of a cannon. There were times when he hit the ball with such power that you just knew the keeper was not going to stop it.

What I loved about having Vieri up front is that as an Inter supporter, you just knew something was going to happen, that he was going to score. The question was more a matter of how than anything else. He was also great in the air.

Not to mention the fact that his favourite sportsman was an Australian Cricketer by the name of Allan Border from when Vieri lived in Australia.

For me, when I think about Christian Vieri, I often think about how he continued to score for us and refused to celebrate while the Curva booed and whistled him. The way he was treated was shit and unfair and every week, I found myself hoping that he would score and that would change but it never did.

Christian Vieri was a real bomber. I absolutely loved watching him.

haha fair enough, I was expecting at least somewhat of a debate but I was wrong. I suppose I'll just need to wait for a striker that can match his ability

I absolutely loved Vieri. Lukaku is not even close for me. Again that old cliche but the defending back then was so much better than today, and all the worlds best players were in Serie A too.

For me the front three of R9 and Vieri with Roby Baggio in behind them was - at least in potential - the greatest strikeforce of all time. Keep the current PSG one, no thanks. But we never really seen it in full flow, was always some injury or something and we got Ventola instead lol.

Yes. But in our defense there hasnt been many “great” Italian strikers since Vieri’s era.

I think we have to see what Lukaku goes on to achieve if anything but for me right now its Vieri and that is not going to change, Vieri was special.

when Vieri was playing serie A used to be way stronger than now. In today's competition Vieri could have been banging 30 goals season in season out

Was Vieri the last great Italian striker?

I guess depends on what you consider great. He was greater than the likes of Del Piero, Montella, Inzaghi, Chiesa etc. The likes of Toni, Di Natale, Gilardino (for a while) or more recent guys like Immobile, Belotti, Pazzini and Balotelli would struggle to get Italian NT minutes or even call ups during the period that Vieri was dominant.

I think Italy produces a lot of great strikers, but they're not top class, elite, whatever you want to call them. And yeah, Vieri is part of that group.

You talk about old top class strikers like Ronaldo, Batistuta, Romario, Shevchenko etc.. Vieri is part of that group. From our other players from the last 20 years, Adriano was briefly part of that group, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is another, as well as Samuel Eto'o. And true, there hasn't been an Italian striker that's part of that group either. Paolo Rossi wasn't part of it either, but his name gets exaggerated due to the 1982 World Cup.

Vieri missing the 2000 Euro hurt Italy a lot, even if they could have won it if it weren't for that defensive slip up that let Wiltord score.

Vieri was immense. Clinical finishing, excellent techniques, remarkable speed (for a player his size) and solid physical strength.

There's a reason why Vieri had like 98 Attack for his stats in the old PES/Winning Eleven games. Even Ronaldo and Henry had like 94 or something, while Van Nistelrooy had 95-96 if I remember correctly. Vieri's finishing was ruthless. Comparing Lukaku to prime Vieri is a joke, and that is being generous.

Too bad Vieri declined very fast too. 2002/2003 was the last season of prime Vieri. Even then, he was showing signs of decline. He started to look heavier and less robust that season. He missed almost half of that season due to injuries, missing the all important CL semi-final ties against Milan. Yet, he still won the Capocannoniere that season. That shows how lethal of a striker he was despite not being at his best anymore.

Season 2003/2004 was the beginning of the great man's fall. He just looked uninterested. The return of the incredible Adriano later in the middle of that season made people forget about him too. Yet, he still achieved respectable numbers that season and the following season (which was his last season with us), though not as prolific as before. After that, he was just a shell of his former self. His spell with Milan and Monaco seemed like a joke. The later part of his career was basically a journeyman's story, switching clubs for God knows how many times, though I remember the ridiculous screamer he scored playing for Atalanta.
