I remember City winning title 2011 by better goal difference, why would Serie A be different? We're ranked 4th officially

Every league has its own rule. Serie A can have more than 7 players on the bench, while EPL cannot. We will have VAR soon, and EPL will not have it in near future. We have goal line referee while EPL do not

Head to head is the tiebreaker and has been for quite a while. However, it's not really factored in until teams have played twice.

We still have a game against Atalanta left, so basing the table standing on head-to-head would be pointless.

Glad to be of service.

It's like these two are saying. Head-to-Head counts, but only if both games are played, otherwise what's the point? Like saying you're through in a CL game without playing the away game. So until both games have been played usually sites take the goal difference. There's no point anyway in discussing if we're 4th or 5th now. It matters at the end.

I would trust the table on inter.it, coz they won the best football club website in Italy.

We are 4th, man. Even the official Serie A website has us as 4th.
Guys, I think I got the difinitive answer from the official Lega Serie A website:

http://www.legaseriea.it/en/serie-a-tim/league-table

We are 4th according to them.

Guys, do none of you remember Mourinho's first season at Inter? Fiorentina and Genoa were tied at 68 points for the 4th CL spot. Genoa had better goal difference, but Fiorentina had better head to head, and Fiorentina got the 4th spot. Also the same season Juventus and Milan finished level on 74 points, but Juve were 2nd because of better H2H despite having worse GD. Just check the 2008-09 table if you have any doubts....

Its been head to head in Serie A for a long time. How can you not know this?

I'm very happy for this win and for Barbosa's first goal. I celebrated with 6 cans of Sprite.

From Football Italia:

Gabriel Barbosa finally became Gabigol when he came off the bench to snatch a late Inter victory in Bologna with his debut Serie A strike.

It was anything but a vintage performance from the Nerazzurri and the hosts had penalty appeals for a mistimed Eder kick on Blerim Dzemaili.

Stefano Pioli did well to make changes when he saw it wasn’t working at the Stadio Dall’Ara and Gabigol finally got his first goal in an Inter jersey.

It’s a fourth consecutive defeat for Bologna, but the result keeps Inter in FIFTH place – behind Atalanta on head-to-head record.

I think above explain everything clearly. The table is generated by computer program and it is safe to say they are wrong. The reporter of Football Italia and commentator of BT sport did say Inter is in 5th place. They should know what they are talking.

I personally don't know if there is an "official rule" about it, but most media, at least in Italy, seem to agree in doing like this:

http://sport.sky.it/calcio/serie-a/home.html

http://www.gazzetta.it/

http://www.repubblica.it/sport/dirette/classifica/calcio/italia/serie-a/A

just to link a few. And it makes sense, for the reasons other users have explained before.

What are you trying to say?
I see nothing that they say head to head result only count after home and away game played. Nothing about it.
I can only see the tiebreaker is
1. Head to head
2. goal difference.
3...
4...

If you look at the standings (right side of the pages in first and second example), they place Inter 4th and atalanta 5th. I read an article on gazzetta about it some months ago and they explained they take into account goal difference before the return match is played. But again, maybe there is no official rule about it.

then that is meaningless, to be honest, as it doesnt reflect the state of play at the end of the season

whether we're 4th or 5th right now (on the same points no less) is irrelevant, the points total is what matters.

There must be an official rule. We all know the Scudetto is reward after the end of season, but there still must be a way to determine the ranking before 38 games are done. I would like to believe you but you need to give me the reference. Football Italia and BT Sport says Inter is in Fifth place and they provide the same valid reason. Now, I trust football expert more than a table generated by a computer program, which is written by a programmer, which might have a bug.

This makes sense. Probably that's why the official Lega Serie A website has us at 4th place. If anyone makes a mistake they shouldn't.
