Fresh interview
Speaking at a CONI event, Marotta first discussed what the captain’s armband means to Inter. Milan Skriniar started the season wearing it but it was handed to Lautaro Martinez following the news that the defender wouldn’t be renewing his contract.
“If certain values are not received, one cannot aspire to be a candidate for the captain’s armband. The values in question are the sense of belonging, the love for the club, and a whole series of situations that are fundamental.”

The Inter CEO then touched on his frustrations with the slow bureaucracy surrounding the club’s new stadium project with Milan.
“Everything is simpler abroad, the construction of a stadium is considered a national element. In our case, on the other hand, reference is made to the land, and therefore you have to go through a very slow process of analysis.
“This causes further problems to arise over time, which have not led to everything becoming more fluid.”

He commented on how greater work is needed to help young Italians in sports.
“Sport after religion is the most relevant aggregation phenomenon, a container of great values, and these values represent a heritage for the boys of today who will be the men of tomorrow. And they must be managed with competence and experience by managers and coaches.
“Sporting Italy needs adequate structures, and when I speak of structures, I’m not only referring to large stadiums, large works, but also small works: gyms, gyms in schools.
“It’s a path that as Italians we must explore in the best possible way, and I am certain that today with the advent of the Ministry of Sport and a well-prepared person like Andrea Abodi we can overcome this handicap.
“And among the handicaps, let’s also include the difficulties in building great works such as stadiums.”

Marotta was then asked if this topic is something he’d like to take further politically.
“Today I am at Inter.”

Finally, Marotta was asked if he was optimistic about Hakan Calhanoglu and Alessandro Bastoni’s contract renewals.
“Always, always…”
Seems like he is preparing for his future challenge

yeah, we should've kept Joao Mario, Icardi, Nainggolan and Gabriel Barbosa, we were soooo better when they played for us.

When he came here, we got better. Maybe somebody else could construct a scudetto team as well, but Marotta did it and the previous management collective didn't. That is a fact.

There are many things wrong with Marotta, but it's hard to run a club in a poor league like Serie A, Inter doesn't own a stadium and running a club with no money to spend, while main players want to leave because other clubs are offering more money. I wouldn't want his job.

Being second in the league, still being in CL and still being in Coppa... these are things that are nothing to scoff about. We might lose all our starters for free, but it's not all on Marotta.

People are just trying to find a scapegoat and Marotta alongside with Ausilio and Inzaghi are easy targets. I remember when Milan's fans were crying about Allegri and blamed him for everything, then he left and they got worsen.

Management have made mistakes but under which conditions? Downsize while keep winning.

If we are not gonna have lined up some very good replacement for our current management, it's gonna be rude awakening for Inter when current guys leave.

He has made many mistakes in the last 1-2 years and i think both Marotta and Ausilio aren't suitable for the way Suning run the club. They're too slow with negotiations and they're afraid to take risks with new signings. We need guys who have experience with running selling clubs in a successful way. That being said, they are working under very difficult conditions and we can certainly do a lot worse than our current management. Just remember what happened to Roma when they replaced Sabatini with Monchi.

The main problem is Suning. Anyone who believes Inter will stop losing starters once Marotta is gone is just lying to himself. Nothing is going to change. Best case scenario downsizing would continue at a slower rate.

Experience with selling clubs but who have experience with selling while reaching for trophies? And then doing that successfully?

Do you seriously believe Suning are going to care about Coppa Italia (you need to win Coppa in order to compete in SuperCoppa) if management don't meet their financial targets till the end of June or even worse club misses out on CL money? Financial stability comes before everything else. That's the ultimate target. Balancing books and qualifying for CL. Everything else is secondary. The talk about trophies is just to promote a success story about their business in Italy.

I seriously believe the targets set for the club is to cut costs but keep winning as much as possible. Of course the winning is secondary, it's by nature with the cost cutting demand there. But instead of signing some young players and not worry about the results, we sign acerbis, mhkitaryans, lukakus of the world. This is because we are tasked to win. They provide immediate quality compared to some young players (with equal costs).

Thing is cutting to the point where we miss CL would be a desaster for us. I mean thats a 20 mio swing even if we dropp out in the groups....
Also why i m critical towards selling any more starters. for ex we re gonna selle Calah and save what 3 to 4 mio per season but we ll then run a real risk of missing out on those 20 from CL...
Loking at the CL race now it s not like we re comfortably in and thats with jubes penalty. Take away Calah and skrin from this season replace em with cheap alternatives and i m not sure we still make top 4...

The issue is we are losing over 100m every year. And Zhangs are losing time. They have the Oaktree loan to finance the club but not for long (soon all that 275m is used, and they need to pay it back anyway). Costs need to be cut because soon enough there isn't anyone paying the bills. Not an easy situation for the management, because top 4 is integral.

But that's precisely the issue you are describing why we are not going full sell mode with Zhangs. They just can't lose the CL money.

This Marotta this and that talk is simply almost completely irrelevant when the ownership is rotten to the core. Only "almost completely" because mistakes have been made. But it's like a sidenote level of importance.

In Italy the closest is probably bbilan managements, maybe Napoli too if they win scudetto this season. In other leagues though (French, Spanish, portuguese, Austrian etc) there seems to be some who able to do it.

Marotta slander is stupid. He's working in unworkable conditions. We had to sell a starter last season, every player was on the market. If it weren't for these conditions, Skriniar renewal would have been wrapped up. We can't just sign off on huge wages in the position we are in either.
Acerbi and mhiki have been fantastic short gap signings, no one wanted then but thank god we got them. He's letting a lot of players go this summer it seems on a free which is the smart thing to do. Did he get everything right? Ofcourse not, show me one single club that did. But we've had way more hits than we have had misses since he arrived thankfully.

There's a reason he's recognised as one of the best SDs about, don't let anyone trick you into thinking otherwise.

I do not disagree but again if you cut cost by 20 mio and therefor you miss on 20 mio of rev cause your out of CL it really does nothing for you. And thats just the money you get from uefa thats not even considering sponsorship money. Plus i d guess that when selling a club you can charge more when you sell a CL club.

Zhangs need to understand they cannot have it both ways you cant cut costs massively and stay successful. Also you cant expect a potential buyer to pay the rumored prices for a team that is out of CL......
Yes it s possible to do both but it gets really fucken hard and you need a good amount of luck.
I do not think we can lose another top performer and not replace him properly without putting CL at risk.

Easiest solution would be if they sold now......

All of these leagues are way more top haevy than italy..... Yes you can do it in germany but theres only bayern that constantly is up there, in france it s PSG and the rest is a lottery austria (lol) In portugal all top 3 clubs are selling clubs but since they all are it does not affect the league that much and they mostly sell abroad.
Spain might be a good proxy but who is it there that is constantly selling and wining trophies? Seems to me like the only teams wining there are RM and barca and occasionally ATM

Cafecordoba initially said trophies though (and not league titles)...
Regarding Spain, isn't they're initially a selling club too? They sold Torres, falcao, & Diego Costa in span of just five years or so iirc. You also have the likes of sevilla, betis, Valencia etc who able to win some lesser trophies like copa del rey or uefa league.

If it weren't for these conditions, Skriniar renewal would have been wrapped up.

Nope, Skriniar renewal would have been wrapped up if Marotta gave Skriniar a contract as they agreed and didn't try to sell him to half of Europe's top clubs an hour after telling him that...

That's 100% on Marotta.

What's on Zhang is blocking an eventual sale as he wanted more than "what was necessary". Zhang didn't let Skriniar go, Marotta did.

As always, the truth is in the middle. Marotta is working with a tight budget but he could also be looking at good and cheap players from outside Italy who are also under 30.

On a completely unrelated note, where do you file your application to become a scout for Inter? All 5 of my references will vouch for my nous of picking good restaurants.
