I think it boils down to position. From what I've seen, France is playing a lot with a back four. Pavard has zero desire to be used as a RB and isn't strong enough to be a conventional CB. His ideal position is where we have him, which is RCB in a back three. It allows him to use his superior technical ability on overlaps without asking too much of him physically.

I think the point being made is that there are many players who can play other positions that aren't their best position or their preferred position, some of them even make it clear when they're not playing in their preferred position, but Pavard is particularly militant about it. He left Bayern because he was going to be a RB, mind you this was in a situation that left them with very little proper RB cover (they had already sent someone else out on loan). Didn't matter, he was willing to leave to get his wishes.

To our benefit I guess, perhaps even doubly so if it gives him more recovery time and less travel during international breaks.
