Wow they really tried hard to piss him off.It really is about that.
When Pavard joined Bayern Kovac started using him as a cb with Kimmich as a rb. But once Kimmich was moved to midfield Pavard became Bayern's starting rb.
This continued under Flick which frustrated Pavard and he was promised he would finally play as a cb when Nagelsmann was hired. But he didn't play as a cb under Nagelsmann either.
Nagelsmann had requested a rwb, Brazzo was obsessed with Dest who ended up at Barcelona and in the end he gave Bouna Sarr to the coach as consolation prize who wasn't Bayern material. So Pavard found himself playing as rb once again.
On paper it looked like 3-4-3 with Pavard playing as rcb and a winger in front of him (usually Gnabry) but in reality it switched to a hybrid 4-4-2 when Bayern were in attack.
In the following season Bayern signed Mazraoui so they can play a natural fullback on the wing and move Pavard to cb. At first Nagelsmann didn't rate him so Pavard found himself playing as a rb again. In time Mazraoui got consistent playing time but then he had health issues. That was the reason Bayern brought Cancelo in January in the first place. That was the only period Pavard played consistently as a cb. But then Nagelsmann got fired and Tuchel switched to a back 4. Tuchel used Pavard both as rb and cb and experimented a lot in order to find the best lineup for the squad.
But Bundesliga is starting tonight with Bayern playing at Weserstadion and guess who's expected to be Bayern starting rb. Benjamin Pavard
Pavard has never really got into a serious discussion wih Bayern about a new contract. It isn't about finances. He's just tired of broken promises. And that's why he wants to leave.
