I don’t think he’s got the legs to play in a 2 . For Barca he played a lot of games as an AM and when he played as a CM it was in a 3. Pretty sure Conte thinks the same but we’ll see

I think Vidal will play as the 1 in 3-4-1-2 or as a B2B in a 3-5-2. I don't think Conte plans to use him as a deep midfielder or DM. We still need Kante or someone like him to make sure Gagliardini doesn't start when Conte needs a DM. That will give us a lot of tactical flexibility in our midfield.

Because our transition to 3412 in the pre season was not done to help Eriksen but Vidal .
Having an AM which presses their defense has good off ball movement is all what Conte wants and Vidal can actually do that quite well.
Its the same as Spalleti with N9.

Not sure how Sensi will fit in this formation though.

That's exactly why I don't see it that way. If Vidal plays there in the hole, then Sensi will not be enough (as defensive cover) and especially Eriksen to play in this 2 player midfield. That means it would be Vidal/Sensi/Eriksen for 1 spot. I don't see it. Plus, did Vidal ever play for Conte in that position? From what I remember, he was that side midfielder, and always. With Spal, he played N9 often in the hole so it made sense Spalletti wanted him there. With Conte, it's different.

I believe Eriksen/Sensi played a lot in the hole in those friendlies because in fact Conte wants to play that way. I think he is shifting from relaying on Brozo as that pushed back midfielder, and wants to try Eriksen/Sensi with a lot of freedom in the front, backed by 2 hard working midfielders. That means we need Vidal, we need Barella, we need Gags and it's very likely we need N9 as well there.

If we play 3-4-1-2 yeah these older guys cannot play in the hole. One playing there needs to be a faster player. Mids playing lower needs to be warriors, so fits to Vidal perfectly. Nainggolan too if he's fit enough (if he's not fit enough, there's no place for him in the squad). Not saying that AM shouldn't play tough also but the main assets needs to be dribbling, passing and transition play.
