China tops the medal list with 37 gold medals. USA follows with 35 as of now.

12 golds in Athletics and 8 golds in Swimming for the USA
1 gold in Athletics and 2 golds in Swimming for China

You do wonder if 1 gold medal = 1 gold medal.

Swimmers can compete in a ton of events, fighters (wrestling, taekwondo, judo, boxing) can only compete in one. Track athletes can compete in 2-3..

I just think we need to place an asterisk on these medal tables.
China’s best events are diving and table tennis. How does table tennis net you 5 golds? China has 8 gold medals in diving alone. They also dominate synchronized swimming.

Comparing any of those disciplines to “athletics” as a whole which includes vastly different sports from shotput to 100M dash is definitely seeing things conveniently.

Today's the last day :(

I love these events, almost at any given time there's something worth watching, at least to me, and even if the sport is something I'm not interested in watching "athletes" compete for gold is a pleasure.

US and China end up tied on 40 gold medals.

In the end the two high jumpers deciding not to split the gold had a “big impact.” Not that Americans will care again for 4 years.

I don't think anyone cares now.

I like Winter Olympics too. Hockey, skying-slalom and giant slalom. Cross country skiing and trampling jump. Hell, I even like figure skating and bobsleigh. Tomba was the man in the 80s and 90s, from Italy. The guy is only a year older than me. So, I could relate very well. Soviet TV was sucked in general, and any sport event was welcomed with rigor) Btw, 50 km cross country skiing is the toughest one. Russians, Norwegians, Danes, Finns and Swedes were the best. Basically, Norse and Varangian descendants.
