You can't oversimplify these things. Imagine how long Calhanoglu would have been available as a free transfer if not for Eriksen's heart attack. Now we consider him a world class player.

There's a lot to like about Hermoso. When you look at the wage structure in our squad, 3.5M net doesn't seem unreasonable. That's about the level for a bench player who regularly contributed. Similar players include de Vrij, Correa (lol), and Frattesi.

I realize this isn't going to happen, but when you look at the alternatives out there this just feels like a missed opportunity. I would have much rather have signed Hermoso than an expensive backup keeper.

Hermoso isn't a 25m asset, a 25m asset doesn't sit on the transfer market for Bosman for a month. He's a near enough worthless asset right now, since no one wants him. Give him a good season and he might get back up to 25m...
I’ll ask Rabiot bout that.

I’ve been wanting us to sign Hermoso for a while since he became a free agent. He was very impressive in both matches we had against atm. Hopefully this is true.

It's not happening. Romano already said so.

But you can oversimplify it to that point. Hakan wasn't in demand..as I said above I'm not saying hermoso is a bad player, but saying he's a 25m player right now is stupid..hakan has only become a 60m midfielder because of what he's developed at Inter, not because of who he was coming in.

In fairness rabiot is a bit different, be was turning down pursuit for better offers. Is anyone even linked with Hermoso ATM?

It's important because people see it like a football manager thing, sign this guy for a Bosman and then we can sell him for 25m next year even if he has a mediocre season. Not gonna happen, the only way he becomes worth decent money is if he has a really good season.

Remember when we signed Erkin for a Bosman and got 500k for him? His transfer market value was 9m at that point in time, but no one was gonna spend money on someone that they could have picked up for free

Rabiot is a similar case with Hermoso. They're both asking for salaries that are considered too high by the market. If they lowered their demands they would have easily signed for a club by now.

Also didn't Rabiot sign for juve the day the window opened? Checking wikipedia he signed on the 1st of July.

Hermoso has now missed most of preseason for whichever club he signs for

And same with Hakan no? Wikipedia says 22nd June he signed for Inter, so before the window opened..

No, he's been a free agent since July 1st. He held some talks with Juve in July after Euro but they couldn't find an agreement and they announced his departure around 20 days ago or something.

Oh sorry you mean Rabiot right now, not when he signed for Juve

Is there any actual serious demand for him though? I know Man Utd have had some links but is there any sign theyre actually serious?

Not really. There were reports about interest from Milan early in the summer and that the player favors a move to EPL but nothing serious so far. Main stumbling block is his demands. He wants minimum 8-9m net (already rejected 7.5m from Juve) and of course his mother wants a hefty agent fee.

One thing I agree with .h. is that older quality players on a free rarely have a good resale value. The reason is not just the age, but that such deals usually happen on large wages, and players on huge wages are not that easy to sell as very few clubs can afford them. So deals like De Vrij, Calhanoglu, and now Taremi, Zielinski, Hermoso, Rabiot, etc have to be evaluated only on what they can bring to the pitch for the club for the duration of the contract. Forget resale value, it will not be relevant.

That said, I think Hermoso would have been a good deal for Inter if we could afford him. Our defence is looking a bit light, specially considering that De Vrij & Acerbi are old & now injury prone. Hermoso is ideally a LCB, but he gives us options in case of an emergency in the centre

Shit, this might take my mercato rating from N/A to -1.

"Dear Oaktree,

We did our best to identify and sign a young defender. Nantes are asking for 30M for Zeze while the Russians want 20M for Renan. València could let us buy Gasiorowski for 15M thanks to a release clause, however he's not convinced that eating bench here will facilitate his development. Heck, we are struggling to strike a deal with Sampdoria for a 17 years old kid named Leoni! Every club tries to optimise their revenue when Inter comes knocking.

Our proposed solution: we take this experienced defender that is a certainty and still U30 - for free." - @Darth_Ausilio
València were quick to protect their asset and Gasiorowski is now out of reach.

València’s latest move has thrown a spanner in the works. By extending the Spaniard’s deal, they’ve increased his release clause to a whopping €45M, effectively pricing Inter out of the move.

All of the remaining budget should be allocated to cancelo. Just live with everything else as it is. Any striker we get will be just as shit as correa. Any defender we get will be comically shit and definitely won't play. Adding an attacking piece to the right side is critical. It shows we're serious about further distancing ourselves from the advancing hyenas. But we won't do it and will get eaten.

Cancelo has lost his drive, these days he just seems to be going through the motions. Very avoidable

Bigger problem than anything is that Cancelo can be deeply unpleasant to be around. He wants to play, which itself is nice to hear, but he gets to the point of being a distraction when he doesn't play. Playing wingback would help mask some of his defensive inadequacies of course, I'm not too concerned about those, I guess you could do worse than getting him on loan but if that happens it's likely only a last day of the mercato deal because City want him sold if possible.
